Tilapia for lunch, pork for dinner
« on: March 16, 2014, 10:39:00 AM »
Today my family is enjoying the bounty from our recent visit with Irv at True South Adventures.  My two sons and myself went to Fort Pierce this past week to chase some Florida pigs.  The weather was good and the hunting was better. I think Irv got my sons hooked on bow fishing. We hunted the first morning with no pigs seen, but it was worth going out just to hear the turkeys gobbling. I think we heard three different gobblers and several hens.  At midday Irv had us on the canals missing several different types of fish.  In late afternoon we were back on stands to sit till dark.  Both of my sons saw several pigs that evening but none went into our cooler.

On the second morning we asked for more bow fishing and that's what we got.  We shot gar, some kind of black catfish and some nice Tilapia.  Irv got the Tilapia ready for the cooler while we dressed for the pig hunt. He got us all to our stands and before long the pigs were on the move.  I shot at one early but the pig was not standing where my arrow hit.  I guess the pig was standing in the wrong place, because I know I didn't miss. The other pigs I saw did not present me an opportunity to "miss" again. My oldest son connected close to dark and this put one in the cooler.

I'll try to post about our last day later this afternoon.

Its always a pleasure to take repeat clients,  Dale, and especially remembering how tough your hunt was with us two years ago in Georgia.

We surely worked hard for Justin's pig that trip.
Im glad the hunting was better this year.

I sure had fun again at this year's reunion with you and your sons.
I kn ow it's  tough to get all three of you together and it was great to spend time with all of you.

I always say my reward is to meet great people on these hunts.
I hated to see you guys leave
I'm not going to spill the beans...but rather let you guys tell your own stories.
I will say that some big congratulations are due to you three pork producers and tillapia shooting dudes.

I apologize for not getting back to this sooner, but something unexpected came up.

Yesterday at lunch we ate Tilapia and it had was great.  At dinner we had pulled pork that had soaked in a brine all night and was slow smoked all day.  Turned out really good.

On our last day we bow fished mid day and went hunting late afternoon. I saw five hogs very early but held out for the largest and ended up not getting a shot as they went out of sight across a cow pasture.  Thirty minutes later the same hogs came past me on the other side at 40 yards and continued out of sight.  Just at dusk a nice size black hog approached the feeder but winded me before I could shoot.  My oldest son saw several small pigs and finally shot one
that weighed 60-70lbs.  My younger son doubled this with two from his blind.  We met up shortly after dark and got all the pigs cleaned and iced down.
Fort Pierce was a long drive for us, but was well worth it.

thanks for reading< Dale

Glad you guys had a good hunt Dale! Somehow I missed you guys again:( Next time I'll be there for sure.
That bowfishing sure is addictive! We've even considered hanging tree stands over known tilapia beds! They sure are spooky.
Looking forward to having you guys down again.

Thanks Jim I hope we will get to see you also.  Maybe you should start having racoon/squirrel hunts because the place is loaded.

Dale,
I think you are too good to those boys of yours.
Letting them shoot all the fish and hogs.

I will say they have taken to bowhunting like a fish to water...both very good at it.

We had some good laughs while bowfishing with the neighbor kid...a self proclaimed expert.

A couple times he would call to the boys "hurry over, there's a big one here". We would then find him shooting at shadows or exclaiming "darn, it just took off".

I almost died laughing when Justin said..."yup, we just missed out on another state record".

We had a ton of fun, and if the fish were actually there...Logan would seldom miss.

Looking forward to our next adventure.

Yea, they even let me fillet and cook the fish and then
trim  and cook the pork.  I didn't mind too much since we can't hunt together too often.  They really enjoyed it.  They're already talking about a return trip.
