Holy trout!!! This forum is huge!!!! Im so excited to be apart of this community!! Ive read a lot of info off this site over the past 18 months so its exciting for me to be able to say Hi and ty to say many who have shared their experience's!!!
A little about me, im 41 from cali. I work as a maintenance tech in a juice processing facility for 12 years now. I was a hardcore eq gamer and eq2. Can you guess what class ? :p i played a ranger! My tradecraft was fletching. I always had a love for archery and always wanted to make a bow. Well once i was finnaly able to pry my self from that virtual world i foynd my self bored. Started my garden, fixed up the house, did dog training. Never watched much tv so i started reasearching bow making. I was sucked in researching daily! No exaggeration but i must of spent at lead-st 150 hours researching... i know you must be thinking thats excessive, but i was affraid of failing. I wanted to make sure i had all the info. But their was just sooooo much!!! So i finnaly came to a point where i put down the tablet and pulled out my wallet. I decided id follow Sam harpers guide ¦) his name seems to come up a lot dont it! Ty sam for your insights!!! I figured 6 bucks on a pieces of red oak and 1 rasp wasnt a huge investment and if i failed no big loss! Besides, in eq you had to make tons of bows to get a kill up heh. So i set out on my journey to make my first bow. Followed mr harpers tutorial to the T. And i crafted my first 15lb draw at 28" .... i kind of missed my mark on draw weight by alot lol. I was so scared of hinge i just kept sanding... at the time i had no bow scale and i had thought i made a 30 pounder at 28. 1 day a friend of mine were out shooting it as my bow scale arrived. I was so excited i told him" see now ill prove to you its at least 30!!! Well bow scale didnt start till 15 and at full draw scale hardly moved :( i thought for sure something was wrong with the scale so we put it on my diamond iceman compund bow which i knew was set to 55, well i was slightly embarrassed when scale showed 55... so my friend poked fun at me and my little 15 pounder. It was 68" ntn heh... soo i ended up giving it to my mom whom had never shot a bow in her life. And ill be dammed if she didnt hit a bulls eye with it... well that was 18 months ago... shortly after i started another and it broke on me during tillering and i actually got hurt! Drinking had a role to play in it. Nevertheless i was heartbroken :( i had failed and got hurt so i went on haietus for several months. I finnaly overcame my pittybparty and gave it another crack. This time during tillering i wore saftey glasses and gloves ( and i still do to this day!) Any how long story still long i currently am at 5 wins 6 losses heh. Made a lefty 45 ponder for friend came our nice. Still just doing the red oak builds but im now incorporating bamboo backings just because i like the look. I ended up getting 50 sticks of bamboo so got plenty to work with. Have ipe that i want to work with next. Good red oak with good grain is hard to get is why i begun backing with bamboo. Any how i am totally addicted and really excited to be involved in this community. I Look forwa rd to getting to know you all!!!
