North Texas Hogs?
« on: September 18, 2007, 11:35:00 PM »
Wondering if anyone had any information on hunting hogs in northern Texas.  I'm in montague county doing some work for a few weeks and I have my bow with me, and I thought I might try to find somewhere to hunt hogs.  However I have no idea what I'm doing or what to look for as I'm from Michigan and I've never hunted hogs or been to Texas before.  Any information you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
JT

Try the LBJ National Grasslands in Decator. There is several thousand acres there all public land that you can hunt. Not many places in Texas that does not have hogs so I'm sure some are there.

If you head west to Wichita county about 10-15 miles  past Wichita Falls is a town called Iowa Park and just past that is a lake called "North fork buffalo creek reservoir" (known locally as lake buffalo). There was always a lot of hogs around there. Here's a map link. You prolly have to zoom out a bit and you should see two lakes just to the west of iowa park, it's the bigger lake just off of burnett ranch road.     Hope this helps.
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

You will need a $45.00 out of state license for non game animals to hunt here. Available where ever license are sold. Also to hunt the grass lands or other wma areas operated by the state you will also need a permit from TPWD to hunt those areas. I think that cost around $50.00 bucks.

You might try the county extension agent. He'll be in contact with the local farmers, and might know where hogs are destroying crops in the county. Many farmers will let you hunt hogs on their land for free. Might try the local Game Warden also, just call the Sheriff's Deptartment, they should have the number. Here's a link to the Montague County Extension Agent -  http://montague-tx.tamu.edu/Staff.cfm
