Tried Chubby Bunnies for Woodies?
« on: March 26, 2014, 07:31:00 PM »
Being a strict wood shaft shooter, regardless  what kind of target I'm shooting, wood shafts are all I shoot. Anyone that shoots wood as I do knows the quandary of lost points and target burn. To battle this problem I have bought some Chubby Bunnie field points which are suppose to greatly reduce penetration and thus pulled points and target burn.
If you shoot wood shafts and have tried CB's, Id' like to hear your opinion of them. Hoping their worth the extra cost and save me some inconvenience.

Point loss is minimal with good bonding agents, but minimizing target penetration should alleviate multiple problems.......I hope.

Get some and let us know what you think........I shoot eclipse 145gr broadheads and was wondering about the CB's myself. Hopefully someone else will chime in with some info but if not, we're counting on you Knawbone!   :readit:    :D

I like 'em! They work great in my hay bales, and in the backstops at the indoor range. The only problem with them, and it's a minor one, is that they are made for 11/32-23/64. When mounted on an 11/32 shaft and shot into a bag target, they are hard to pull out because of the shoulder. They can be be chamfered to make it easier to pull out.

I use a head very much like CB's in concept now, instead of the pointy ones.  Shot the same bag target all winter and still it is holding together with no area of total shoot thru.  They spread the impact zone well.  I have been experimenting with screw in heads of that sort with a judo like add on behind it and I think that will make an excellent small game head for this fall.

Not a problem Darcy, will do. Yea I noticed the pronounced lip on the farrel of the point AK. I will take them to work ( I'm a tool maker ) and chamfer them. I occasionally make points on my lathe, but it's time consuming........need to set up an automatic acme sometime.....could spit them out by the thousands!Oh well, anyway thanks for the responses guys. I appreciate the info on the bag target too Chuck.  Knaw

Try putting a lip of epoxy to avoid chamfering for those who are not tool and die makers.

Dave,

Don't want to change the direction of your thread but I use Minwax clear gloss poly mixed equally with mineral spirits, I do not experience target burn on my woodies using this finish. I'm shooting into 3d deer, black foam layers, and compressed clear plastic. Even shooting into dirt while stumping does not wear the finish. I do leave it glossy.

The finish is hard and tough.
