Going hunting near Liberty Hill Texas
« on: April 04, 2014, 09:11:00 AM »
I'm down here visiting my brother in Cedar Park, Texas and got permission to hunt some property for hogs and other varmints.  The landowner says that they see axis deer pretty frequently.  It's a low fence property.  Anyone ever hunt that area?  Getting a crack at a free range axis deer would be interesting.

There are definitely free range exotics in the area, but they don't stick around long enough to pattern. Turkey are running pretty hot and heavy right now and the overcast weekend should be good for hogs.  Keep the wind in your face!

I don't have permission to go after turkey unfortunately but hogs and other varmints are fair game.  Looks like I'll be going monday and tuesday before we have to head back north.  Should be fun!

Cedar Park, that is where my daughter and son in law moved too last year.  I went down from Michigan to see them the last week of Feb.  I then headed over to west Tx to hunt javelina and pigs with the Wenzel brothers.  Will be back to Texas next year I think.  good luck to you this weekend.

Good luck!  Remember that if you do not have the applicable licenses then you can't legally hunt the critter even with owner/landlord permission.  So just be careful and have your licenses. Lots of people think you can come down here and hunt depredating critters w/o license if you are owner of land or landowners agent b/c of how law is written. In reality, the wording and your answers are what can get you into hot water. What will generally happen is GW will ask something like "whatcha hunting" and that starts the ball rolling.
I have cousins who come into town and we'll let em go after hogs for depredation/control purposes but they know what it is they're doing and how to properly answer questions posted by authority figures

Whatcha hunting = nothing, just killing hogs

Whatcha gonna do with the ones you get? do you keep the tusks, etc? = nope we let em lay

"Hunting" hogs w/o a license can get you ticketed even if you are the landowner. "Killing" them is okay. The difference is semantics but important especially if you cant take GW to a spot on your prop to show land damages from the critter.  Saying that you're hunting, especially saying that your hunting w/ the idea of taking trophy/memento is generally enough to get you a ticket if your GW chooses.  GOOD LUCK!

Good luck! You will be within 20 or so minutes of where I live!

Hey Fishnhunt, don't forget I got that bow rack of yours sitting in my garage!

I'm buying the the 5 day special non resident hunting license.  I'd rather pay up front for the license then pay later for a fine.

Bisch, any good bow shops in the area? We ate in Georgetown at a place called El Monumento just the other night.  Nice little town.

Thank you Bisch. Lets meet up and do some hunting soon! Just let me know when after mid april and we can do it. Thanks again for holding onto that rack for me and for picking it up for me!

Hawk-thats the best way to do it, the 5 day is cheap and puts some $$ into the coffers so good on you. I hope you see some critters! Make sure to carry your hunters ed card with ya too if you're young enough to need one.

I drive through the area on the way to hunt. Hogs are around. Depends on the property. They come and go where I hunt but stay on the surrounding property more often because of better food, water or cover I guess.

Well it's looking like I won't be hunting down here this trip.  The landowner who was going to let me hunt is going through a family emergency.  We're hoping everything works out well for his family.  So I guess it just gives me another reason to come back down here to visit my brother.  Next time!

Sorry for the late response, I was at a 3D shoot north of Dallad all day yesterday. There is a great little bow shop in Georgetown. It is called Double G Archery and is on Hwy 29 just east of town. Like almost all archery shops these days, he does not have much in the way of traditional bows or gear, but it is a fun place to hang out. I am there 4-5 days a week.

Sorry to hear you are not going to get to hunt. Wish I would have known that on Friday because you could have come to the shoot with us!

Yeah we just found out today so it's a bummer but we'll stay busy doing other things.  I would have been all over a 3D shoot!  Next time!  I'll have check out Double G before we head back home.
