Zwickey broadhead turning on adapter
« on: April 08, 2014, 07:15:00 PM »
I've had some Zwickey screw-ins mounted on some GT3555s that I just tried to unscrew. The head is turning on the adapter and I can't unscrew them.

I set those arrows aside for now. I'll pull the inserts and then heat the head enough to soften the epoxy later.

For now, I bought some new 130 gr glue on 2-blade Zwickeys and 45 gr adapters and I will glue my own. Before mounting the BHs on the adapters, I cut  several grooves lengthwise on the adapter. I scuffed up the inside of the BH (covered with paint) with some strips from a steel scouring pad and then cleaned adapters and heads well. I will use the German epoxy I use for my knife handles. This stuff is as strong as any other 24-hour epoxy if cured at room temperature. When heat cured, though, it's a totally different beast. As the curing temp goes up, the time required goes down and the strength more than triples. It can be cured at up to 320 degrees F and cures in just 5 minutes at that temp. Once cured, I have never been able to break it loose. The one time I tried to take some wood scales off a full tang knife, I had to grind it off. Even after all the wood was split off, a wood chisel would not peel it up from the steel.

Bet those Zwickeys don't turn on the adapters now   :)

I take a tap to my field points.  Maybe that needs to be done to your hunting points along with a good cleaning after that.

Jon, the adapters I'm using have really deep, sharp square circumferential grooves that keep the head from pulling off, even if the epoxy bond fails. I cut a few longitudinal groves in to keep it from turning. I imagine hot melt would be all that's needed, but I decided to fix these so they would be PERMANENT screw-in BHs.

I see they are for carbons.  If they were for aluminum I still have some of the old glue in/on broad head adaptors for broad heads or field points  in a few sizes.  I would give you a have a dozen.
