Hen decoy
« on: April 09, 2014, 02:24:00 PM »
Just picked up a stuffer hen ( real hen that's been stuffed). Anybody use them? My questions are 1. How do you transport them? Have you made or built a box to protect on a walk? Pics would be wonderful if you're so inclined. 2. Have you or can you spray them with say a matte finish poly to shed rain if that happens? I hunt where the birds are extremely pressured. Thanks Gangers!

I transport my decoys in a duck/goose decoy bag. Most have backpack straps built into them and keep your decoys secure. I only have a real turkey fan not a whole bird but either way over time and use it will get beat up a little. I wouldn't worry about waterproofing it as they are (feathers) naturally water resistant.  Good luck driving the toms nuts with the real/fake hen!! Post some pics also....

Certainly will. I know someone out there has dealt with this. Just trying to shorten my learning curve.

I'd use a waterproofing spray like CampDry or ScotchGuard.

If you can't find a full blaze orange carry bag, consider wrapping an orange band around whatever you use to carry them.  Last year I saw a hunter in a gameland parking lot carrying a decoy upright in a mesh bag.  From a little bit away, the mesh wasn't easy to see, but the jake decoy was!  That's how accidents happen...   :(

My Father uses a turkey that is a body Mount and a lot of gobblers have been killed over it. Not sure how he transports though. I think he carries it under his arm.
