Older Polar Fleece
« on: April 11, 2014, 09:15:00 AM »
I bought some polar fleece back 20-25 years ago (original treebark pattern) - been looking for the same weight fleece for years.  Most of the stuff I see available now is really light and thin.  Does anyone still make good camo in the heavier weight "polar" fleece of yesteryear?
Everything has a price - the more we accept, the more the cost

I'm with you.  Cabela's has what they call their "Berber Fleece" which is heavier than anything else I find. I think the claim is the newer stuff if just as warm with less weight...Tom

I purchased some military  desert camo,  its windproof and very quiet fleece from rocky woods fabric.  the best and heaviest fleece I have come across.    You can get samples for 50 cents.  Don't bother with the waterproof version it is not what it's cracked up to be

Try NatGear … I have a fleece jacket of theirs and it is heavy fleece … I really liked that old Tree bark pattern it was great in the elk woods. You see it for sale occasionally in the classifieds.

I have been looking for one of those older jackets forever now. Had one as a kid but obviously out grew it. Everything I find nowadays is way thin or has windstop in it and I dont like the windstop.

I had the Cabelas woodland green fleece suit. It was thick enough for this climate and with layering you could get by in colder weather. I liked it mostly because it shed water fairly well and was very quiet. Finally wore out the pants and then don't you know they quit making it. So I gave away the jacket and started over with some Berber fleece which is as good but now that is getting scarce as it seems the thin stuff is in favor of the run and gun crowd. So the hook and bullet stores are catering to them. Funny thing happened on a float hunt. My cousin asked me about the fleece I was wearing and if I liked it. I told him yes especially if I get wet I can just take it off and shake the water out of it and put it back on. He said I can do that too pointing to his insulated coveralls with a camo cotton shell. Rather than argue I just said "Good" Really though, you have to try it to believe it. You really can shake maybe 85% of the water out of a soaked fleece garment.
