Mike, there were many models. The 1957 Kodiak was the first Kodiak to have a single shelf.

Pose the question in the Collector's forum and you should get some more specific answers.

1955 & 1956 Kodiak had a dual shelf. They were full recurves.

My Alaskan is dual. It's a "longcurve" style.

At one point the following were dual shelf:
Cub
Grizzly
Alaskan
Polar
Kodiak

They all eventually became single shelf at varying points in time.  The Cub returned as a dual shelf with plastic post rests in the late 1960's.

Of course there were always the entry level models like you see my son holding in my avatar.

Stone Knife.
My local shop, Jerry's Archery, has a Bear dual shelf with compass on it, it's a semi recurve.
I like shootin with both hands, so the bow sparked my interest....
I'll probably still get another Hill Tembo with no shelf, so I can shoot in Ambi

The '54,Kodiak II was the "Compass Kodiak" but it had very pronounced recurves.I suspect that one is a different model.
