Riser Quiver Inserts
« on: May 16, 2014, 09:49:00 AM »
I have had heck with these.  The quiver that I like on my one piece recurve, I have used the 1/4 -20 brass inserts.  I cannot keep them in the bow.  They work the epoxy loose on pull out.

Does anyone know of any other riser inserts that have a "lip" or flange on them?

Anyone know a bowyer that sells something better?

Has anyone ever used the 5/16-24 "stabilizer" insert as a riser insert for a bow quiver?

Sounds like you drilled your holes too big.  What epoxy are you using.  If you have the ability to install threaded bushings look at the ones from Fastenal that have 1/4-20 inside.  Pretty easy to install and with a little glue they don't come out.

You are not supposed to glue quiver inserts. They are made to flare our when you tighten the screw down and will not come out afterwards.

I found something called a rivet nut insert.

I think, I am going to have to drill out to a bigger size.

Jon,

Not using that type of insert.  Really don't like those.

Mike,

The one that pulled out already had a hole drilled in the riser when I got the bow, so I think you are right.  The other one has stayed in that I drilled.

I had used the 5 minute epoxy, which now I believe was a mistake!  What glue do you recommend?  What about JB weld?

I don't think the epoxy job was correct on that original one that pulled out. I epoxy the grips on my full tang knives and I guarantee you could not chop one off with a hammer and chisel.

Even if the hole was oversize, the epoxy I use is so much stronger than the wood, it could not come out without ripping chunks of wood out with it.

If you file some cross scratches in the outside of the inserts, clean the wood and inserts THOROUGHLY and use a good 24-hour epoxy, they will definitely not come out, I don't care how much strain is on them from the quiver, or how much vibration there is in the riser.

I agree with his.  I installed some brass quiver inserts in a bow recently. Between the insert bottoms flaring out and the right epoxy (doesn't take much) there's no way these things are coming out.

Martin used to sell some with a lip. You epoxied them in, and then when the screw went in, they expanded a flange at the bottom. I put in probably at least a half dozen sets. I may still have a set somewhere.
If it's in your way, move it.

The drill hole for the inserts that I used from Three Rivers was for 1/4-20 inserts, so using the Martin inserts is not an option at this point.  I know there is vibration with the quiver hood.  I am going to have to drill out larger for the next set of inserts.  Going to check with Fastenal.

What epoxy do you guys use?

Any 24 hour epoxy will do the trick.  Never use 5 minute on anything that will need to hold.  LOL

Any good epoxy should work.I use Epo Grip Fast set that I get from a taxidermy supply company. It sets in about 6-8 minutes and is very strong.I use it on all my broadheads, adapters and inserts as well.

Even fast set epoxies should be allowed to cure 24 hours or so before any heavy use.

Sanding the insert is a good idea and for added insurance you could also score the wood inside the hole with a dremel bit or you can also use a tap, sized so it just lightly scores the inside. You don't need full threads, just a little scoring.

I also make sure the wood in the bottom of the hole is well sealed as bare wood can allow water to get into the riser and there is potential for the wood to swell and crack there.

Generally,if an epoxy lets loose,it is about the prep of the two surfaces to be joined. If you think it is a problem with your epoxy, just switch to a slower set time and make surte you let it cure for at least 24 hours before you crank the bolts down.

Also make sure your bolts don't bottom out as that could jack your insert out when tightening.

I've got some brass inserts in stock that mount flush with the riser and no flange made by BPE archery accessories. I just use a couple drops of Gorilla impact resistant super glue.....

If you want some let me know... Kirk

I found at Fastnal a 1/4-20 insert that threads into the riser like a wood screw.  It has a flange.  I drilled a touch deeper, expoxied, and screwed it down flush, now is dry time.  Thank you for all the feedback.  No I will be able to shoot my curve Sunday at Chester now with my favorite quiver on it.

2x what Wingnut said. Slow cure is stronger. Work the same drill bit into the hole by hand to clean out the first stuff you tried. Rough up the surface of your bushing and clean with lacquer thinner for a better bond. Plug the hole in the bushing with tape, or bowstring wax, so the epoxy doesn't mess up your threads. Wax will melt with a little heat after the epoxy sets up, if you need to clean it out.

FYI:  Kustom King also sells inserts with a flange on them.
