What difference does LW or RW make??
« on: September 21, 2007, 09:26:00 PM »
With all the hub-ub about matching your fletching to your broadhead when using a single bevel head, I got to wondering.  I've always used RW helical.  I'm right handed and I've had people tell me I should be using LW.  Does it really matter?

I don't see any difference. Been shooting both for as long as I can remember.

If RW works for you then stick with it. I don't think it matters much anyway, unless you shoot using your finger as an arrow rest, like with some self bows.

It will make a difference with penetration on a single bevel broadhead per Dr. Ashby. You will need to match for the broadhead bevel.

To be politically correct:
In the red states, shoot RW. In the blue states, shoot LW.
All independents shoot straight fletches. If undecided, use vanes.

I could be wrong but, I thought that it had to do with the clearance of the arrow on the shelf and riser. If shooting right handed the left wing feather would allow better clearance and of shooting left hand the right wing feather. However I have shot the both and it didn't seem to matter.

Left or right fletch, it does not matter. The arrow does not start to spin until it leaves the string. By then it is past the riser. Just my opinion.
I do not know about the affects with single bevel broad heads.

Right wing can unscrew your field points. Left wing won't.

I tried some LW because I was having problems with my field points coming unscrewed.  Didn't help.  field points still came loose. Wax on the threads helps keep them tight.

I have both jigs for my fletcher, but have always used RW.  No real reason other than when I started shooting a compound in 1983 we didn't have any pro shops around so my brother and I set up our ouwn arrows.  I've been shooting RW since then.

It may make a differnce on penetration, but if your arrows are tuned to your bow, ya should shoot both the exact same. I use left as it clears my hand better when I shoot a bow that th earrow sits right on top of my hand! I am a righty! Shawn

If you have problems with your field points coming off.  Try a small lock washer.  It's weight is minimal and will help keep your heads from unscrewing.  If the washer has a lip that is more then the field point, nock it down with a cheap mill file while it's on the arrow.

If these arrows are dedicated to being pratice arrows, you could always take a drop of glue on the point where it meets the insert.  Mind y ou if you do this it probably will never come off!!!  Epoxy would set it in the insert forever.  Though with some judicious heating you can pop epoxy, I'm not sure if it would ruin the insert or arrow first though.

i'm glad Tony put it the way he did. I was afraid to bring politics into this. I am right wing all the way just for that reason!  :biglaugh:  In other words, right or left wing makes no difference to me on arrow flight. One thing I have found is that RW Turkey feathers are more available because more people shoot left wing, being right handed.(an old wives tale)...Terry

I have always shot rw and am right handed. I have never had any penetration issues. I tried lw and didn't like them because the feather hits my hand.

Shawn, I take it that your talking about difference in penetration using a single bevel BH. I have found no change in penetration with RW of LW fletching, using 2 or 3 blade BH with a dual bevel.
