Hang your string from a nail, pull it tight, and measure end to end.

Can you measure it on the bow? Is it from the outside tips of the loops?

yes, I measure with the bow strung to my preferred brace height.

Ok thanks. Just so I am clear, from the string grooves, top of the loop, or the "y" where the loop meets the string?

From my understanding, you find what brace height your bow prefers best. Once established, take the string off, hang one end on a nail, and measure from end to end of the string.

That's how I have always sent my order in for a string, when asked for an ASL. Good luck!

The strings I order from SBD have been measured on my braced bows. I measured to the very end of the loop. They have all fit perfectly. I guess you can do it either way.

I only measure on the strung bow. You can't get as much pressure on the string just pulling it taunt. Strings can have varying amounts of stretch , especially Dacron. I've seen Dacron contract over an inch once it's removed from the bow.

I feel like I can never get an accurate enough measurement when measuring the string on a braced recurve.

Paul,
I use a soft tape. Lay at the top of the loop, follow the curve, down the string to the other curve, to the top of the other loop. Works for me.

Ask your string builder before ordering which way they prefer.

I ask my customers to give me the string length measured OFF the bow (as described above). That way there is no confusion.

Me too.  For whatever reason we seem to get more improper string measurements when customers measure the string on the bow.
