Wrapping Woodies?
« on: June 04, 2014, 10:21:00 PM »
So I picked up a beautiful new Halfbreed on the classifieds here a few days ago (Thanks Green!)and I need a new set of wood arrows to shoot out of it. Somehow shooting carbon through this bow just doesn't seem right. So I ordered some tapered douglas fir from Surewood and I'm about to get started. I'm having a bit of a struggle though. One side of me wants to make them "rustic", the other side wants them to be highly visible. So I decided I would do half and half for now. I would love some "decorated" white caps on the visible half, but don't have a crester. I thought about doing some kind of rattle can fade, but I've also thought about putting some wraps on them. Wraps on wood...I can't decide if I like that idea or not, any thoughts / ideas? Pictures?

Putting wraps on a tapered wood shaft will work fine but being tapered the pattern of the wrap won't line exactly.Usally not bad, just won't be perfect. My first set of wood years ago I just painted the crown end white with a spray can.I didn't have a crester or dipping tubes back them. You can do your own hand cresting with an arrow spinner.Just roll the arrow with your fingers and paint a crest on it.I just spray my crown white and used all white feathers and layed my cresting lines with a magic marker.Crude but worked fine without investing a lot. Then I got a crester, paint brushes and dip tubes and did a better job.

You really should paint the crown and crest on wood. It gives you a much better result.

a spray paint transition is totally acceptable if you like that look. markers like JRY309 mentioned can work too. in the old days there were a lot of arrows 'crested' with a spray paint look. post some pics when you're done.   :)   Todd

What I like about wraps is that feathers DON'T come off.

Thanks for the replies. I have given the markers / paint pen crest some thought, but from what I've read, there's no available clear coat that won't make them run. The thought of doing the work and then having it messed up in just a shot or two bothers me. I also thought about putting "double doggs" from Onestringer on...at this point I'm thinking the spray paint option may be the best for now. I like building my own stuff, but may just have to have snag "whip me up" some of his amazing creations before it's all over.

I tried a wrap on a cedar shaft.  I didn't like the way it looked at all.  I got better results with a spray can. Just my .02
Never quit doing good.

No problem with a perfect wrap match on tapered shafts . Start with the shaft aligned down the center of the wrap . Roll slightly one way and finish that way with fingers. Roll other way , done with good alignment .
Another TG member passed this to me and it works .
Note ,  a very few wont work out and practice keeps these to a bare minimum.

I just made these. Just experimenting really so they all vary some. I sealed them with wipe on poly. They aren't perfect but I crested them with paint pens. They are nothing fancy. I'm not real happy with them but they will do for hunting arrows. I am going to get a sewing machine motor and make a crester.

I've done wraps on tapered carbons and got pretty good at lining them up, it just seems wrong on some level to wrap wood arrows. The thought crossed my mind though, so I decided to run it by "the experts". Thanks for all replies and I'll have some pictures of the "rustic" half before long. cahaba, I figure we all have to start somewhere, I'll be ok if my first attempts turn out that well. I appreciate the post and just sent you a PM.

The ONLY Woodies I EVER Wrap are my Judo Stumpers! I use a Combo of Paint and "Funky-Fied" Artfully Adjusted with a Sharpie to make them REAL Easy to Spot in the Woods. Regular Target or Hunting? NEVER!! Always Paint.
