Broadheads ?

Hey guys i have been roaming the internet looking at different broadheads for my longbow im bout to order im just now coming back to trad with my recurves in the past i generally used three bladed heads but i like using my back quiver but in some instances they wud snag but other than that i liked them . But i was wonderin inside the gang wut the consensis was two blade vs three if it helps the ? The bow im going with is leon stewart's lil slammer @ 60# my draw is 26.5 so im figuring on getting round 55 r so lbs out of it and ima peolly go with the arrows ive used in the past arrow dynamic trads but im looking to make clean fast kills , id like to go with a two blade mainly so i wont have to deal with snag any thoughts r observations wanted . Welcome back to Trad! We are glad you're here!  Your question is a frequent one.  If you do a search on here for old threads you'll quickly see it's an area with a lot of opinions.  I would think at your draw weight, you'll do fine with a sharp 2 or 3 blade head.

All the opinions were summed up pretty well in this comment from the bottom thread from straitera (who ironically hails from Texas):

I will be shooting a 3 blade when bear hunting in Alberta next spring,also like a 3 blade on deer and antelope size animals.When it comes to bigger critters I swear by a good heavy 2 blade.

Just yesterday I received two packs of the Grizzly 3 blade instinct heads from Bob Morrison. They look great and the way the back of the blades are designed I doubt that they would  hang up in a back quiver. When I asked Bob what he thought about them he simply said, "Best hunting head I've ever shot".

You have plenty of steam for a 3 blade but with a back quiver you would most likely be happier with a 2.  I like to compromise with a BIG 2 blade, like a Tusker or Zwickey Delta, or a Simmons Shark.

Best of both worlds IMO.

I use 2 blade heads, general Zwickey or Magnus. They are plenty for the whietails I hunt.

I switched from a big 3 blade to a Tree Shark. I love the Simmons but carry them in a side quiver.

Either choice will likely produce the same end results. Neither choice is perfect for every mark.

Personal confidence is key....pursue your desire.

If you were to "slightly " round the back of the blades, would that help? They might not dig in the leather as bad.

I am shooting Woodsman Elite's.  I am planning to get some Grizzly instincts.  They look primo awesome.  

I can sharpen a 3 blade with confidence.  I like the 2 blade but, I really like the edge I can put on a 3 blade.        

Shot a lot of different heads and I will continue to avoid wide broadheads, for flight/planing reasons in the wind.

Ah, the great debate.  I am a recent return to traditional and had concerns too.  Three blade for more cut,  two blades for better penetration.  I picked up some Zwickey lights which I mounted on adapters.  They fly great and for me, I decided to go with a bit penetration potential.  Hope to let you know in October

this thread and those like it are as hotly debated as the great BLACK WIDOW threads at the other site back in the 90s...or the Dead Cow Broadhead Test thread...hahahaha

That being said I have favorites too...


- started with Zwickey Eskimos...great heads...but had two of them come apart where the ferrule is spot welded to blade.  Lost confidence in their strength and started shooting Ribteks.

- been shooting Ribtek 160 and 190 heads since late 90s....shot everything with them from small game, turkey, hogs and deer.  My favorite two blade head for ease of sharpening, keeping edge, durability, and design.  Harder to get now as not sold in states but I bought about 10 dozen and had them shipped from Australia so I should be set for a few years.

- also shot SNuffers...original Rothhaar snuffers and loved them...the ones I got made by Magnus I dont like...the metal is too hard and have a difficult time sharpening with my mill files.  Got a set of the new Grizzly Instinct this year...these are 175...going to try them on whitetail this year and maybe bear in spring.  I have also tried the Grizzly Kodiak 200gr single bevel...great head but not got the hang of sharpening where I can do it as easily or as quickly as my Ribteks....so did not use the Kodiaks last year...and shot a nice big boar with the 190 Ribbie.

Find one that is well built, has good reputation, a design that you like and have confidence in...and shoot them.  There are a lot of great broadheads out there.

If I did not have all these Ribteks would likely shoot the TuffHead instead...or learn to sharpen the Grizzly Kodiaks as they are great too.
