Take hair off a tanned deer hide?
«

I have a deer hide with hair on that i would like to consider for a back quiver. Would like to take hair off for the look (maybe resurface the leather some and stain it), the reduction in weight, and less bulk. Any experience taking hair off or thoughts on the idea? Was the hide from my first deer with a bow (nice 8 pointer) Thank you.

I have brain tanned quite a few deer skins. You soak the hide in a bucking solution to scrape the hair and grain off. Not sure how this would work on a commercially tanned skin. I think I might try lashing it to a frame and dry scrape it. If that don't work I would soak it in water till the hair starts to slip then wet scrape it. Some good info here - braintan.com. Google dry scrape and wet scrape. Lots of info on the net. Good luck.

Because the hair was set before tanning you might not be able to with good results. Why not build the quiver with the hair inside. Be sure the hair is pointing down, from the top of the quiver to the bottom.

I dry scrape my hides to de-hair. It really wouldn't matter how it's tanned. You will have to frame it tight and make yourself a sharp scrapper.
