Can I get some glue on broad head advice?
« on: July 29, 2014, 08:45:00 PM »
Would you use a 125gr glue on BH with a 75gr adapter or 100gr glue on BH with 100gr adapter. I'm wanting to order some 125gr Wensels or Bodkins or some 100gr Wensels and use the adapter to get 200gr. So which setup and why? Or will there not even be a difference I should worry about?

Paul,

I don't think you will ever notice a difference.

My only concern is the strength of the adapter itself. I thought maybe the 100gr adapter may be stronger then the 75gr since it has more material?

I don't think there is a strength issue. The 75 gr adapter is just shorter.I prefer more steel in the broadhead though as strength can be a factor with lighter heads,so given the choice,I would want the 125's.

I agree with JimB...go with the 125 grain broadhead...

I've used several combinations but do not have any conclusive, empirical data. I only have an opinion and it is the same as JimB's.

Id go for the 125 gr head since there are so many different styles in 125 if you ever decide to change.

I recently mixed and matched some adapters and point weights like you describe....as long as the total weight is the "same" (they will be different, within a few grains based on how much glue you use and manufacturing variables) you will not see any difference.

I also agree with the others, put the weight (strength) in the broadhead first.

Or just go with a 180 to 200 grain head and avoid the extra joint and possible alignment errors.

I would take the option of more weight in the broadhead rather than the insert every time. So much so I now have a dozen of Joe Furlong's titanium Tuffhead inserts.

Well I just seen Woodsman Elites are available as a 200gr screw in, but 40-50$ is a lot for only 3....or is it?

It is quite a bit,but I managed to get some VPA's off the classifieds for quite a bit less. I got some 250 grain and some 150 grains for some nice savings. After getting them in and shooting them,I would say they are probably the toughest head out there. I would try to get some at a savings, but they probably are worth the full price.

No worries...a horse apiece.   You'll end up getting more BH's, adapters, arrows, bows, etc. than that over time...especially different adapter weights.  Try them all!

If I had to answer your question, I'd pick the 125 BH w/75 gr. adapter.  Put the steel in the BH, there is no strength difference between a 75 gr. adapter and a 100 gr. adapter.  The weakness there is at the interface between the shank and tapered head, the extra 25 grains just makes the 5 degree taper longer.
