Help!!
« on: July 29, 2014, 10:08:00 PM »
Well, I was working on my newest creation today trying to get the limb timing perfect! It's looking really good so I took it out for a few shots to see how she felt. Had it strung up with an old tillering string and the knock fit was really loose. On the very first shot on this bow Im guessing the string pulled away from the knock and on the release it basically dry fired!!!  The arrow slapped into the bow loud enough that my wife heard it in the house! The string slapped my forearm ( I wasn't wearing my Armgard) and left a huge bruise and the bow fell to the ground! There isn't any apparent damage to the bow, thank God! I eventually worked up the nerve to shoot it a couple dozen times at full draw and it felt and sounded ok, but I'm worried! What should I be looking out for? Streaks in the glass, ect...?  I'm worried! I was building this bow to sell to a family member but I don't want to if there is a chance of it coming apart later! What do y'all think?

Most glass bows can take this kind of punishment if there were no defects to begin with.
In this case the string hitting your arm  used up some of the energy.

Looking it over good like you have and keeping an eye on it is all you can do.
Sounds like it made it.

I have dry fired my bows a couple times (I must have had too loose nocks and they somehow came off the string while I was drawing with a split fingered draw) and have never had my bow damaged. If you are making it for a family member, just tell them what happened and give them a little better deal, after looking it over real closely and shooting it some more to verify that it is OK.
