Crown dip,Random stripes, and colors....
« on: August 08, 2014, 09:40:00 PM »
So, one of my favorite threads on pow wow is the one Rob Distefano started titled Woodie Love. It rarely gets to page 3 as someone is always adding something new.  I really do enjoy looking at everyone's artistic abilities and creativity. However as I'm now just getting into wood arrows I'm questioning weather I want to delve into the art of cresting, I do like it; don't get me wrong but I am usually one to make things permanent that have significance, so for those of you willing to share. Does anyone have a crest that has a "meaning" or a significance? Or are you the type who just likes certain colors and just randomly puts them in place as you see fit. Thanks in advance for sharing...

Crests were used many, many years ago to know who's arrow was who's. Every archer had their own crest so it did mean something. Now it's a statement of good taste and great design......they sure look pretty in a back quiver.     You should just try a few to see what you like.......you will know when you find the right look for you.

I just try to come up with something that looks nice. I do spend a good bit of time thinking about what I want it to look like and am fussy about the right colors eg. all yellows are not the same, nor are reds or greens....

Also try to come up with unique patterns instead the same ol' 7 line crest. And be care full not to get it too busy, its eal easy to get too much going on and then you just end up with a bunch of lines. A little can say a lot if done right. Paul Jalon (look at the arrows on Ron LaClair's website) is probably the best I've seen at making a little go a long way.

This is the crest I've used for my last couple sets and I will likely continue using it.  There are a few folks who recognize its significance.

Pink stripes on a pink background. With pink feathers. And nocks.
's all I've ever needed. Most folks know they're mine  ;)

I've made a number of arrow sets for folks where the cresting has a particular meaning for them.
I've done clan badge colors, family crest colors, and military ribbon colors. The military ribbon colors are particularly  meaningful; I've done Vietnam service, Korean War service, Purple Heart, and Afghanistan service.

Fletcher, I made some similar arrows. They represent 1/3 of my older sons life when I returned and my younger son was 9 months old when I saw him the first time. It took a while to make up that time. That crest has meaning for a lot of us.

I love to look at artistically done arrows but for my hunting I go with what is most visible to me. That is usually pink feathers and wraps with a couple white lines to complement a white nock. I'm really thinking about an all white shaft.

I still have a perfect mental snap shot of shot placement on my last few deer. Watching that pink fletch bounce through the woods after pegging the off side shoulder is worth the teasing you get for shooting pink.    :D

This is kinda my signature crest. No meaning to me but I prefer it be symmetrical. Got lotsa arrows out there with this crest. The video show the importance of using a metallic to tie it all together JMO.

My last couple dozen have been strictly rip-offs, I copied the crest pattern from a micro-flite and spray-bombed above and below the actual crest like the 60's Pearson arrows. The shafts other-wise are completely painted one color.

I use my initials in Morse Code.  Wide and narrow stripes for dots and dashes.  They definitely identify the arrows as mine.  I've also started adding a decal (made on my pc) with an eagle, globe and anchor, my sergeant stripes and my service ribbons.  Initials in the fletching area, decal between the fletching and the end of the crown dip.

my father told me back in the 50's him and his brothers would make the center of the crest dead on side by side with the back of the bow riser at perfect brace height,,,, he said the crest was a measurement mark for the brace height on the bow..

made perfect sense to me but I never think of doing it when having arrows made.

I use the resistor color code as a crest to mark the arrow spine.

Can you elaborate on this one?
I do like the morse code idea a guy I shoot with does this.
I also like the idea of cresting the brace height as well
Very cool guys. Thanks for the input and keep them coming!
