I like a diaphragm call for up close and hands free.  I like the Primos hyperlip single for just about everything else.  I have tried a lot of them.  I'm sure others have their favorite as well.  Lots of good ones out there.

Assuming you are asking about Elk rather than Moose my absolute favorite for the past 20 years is the Sceery ACE-1.

If you are good with a diaphram they are much more handy when you are in tight and you can also vary the volume easier.  The difficulty I have with diaphrams is the occasionally squeeker I produce - my own doing for sure.

I too am curious. Is the question related to Moose or Elk? I made the presumption with your handle you ment Moose. Please clarify.

I've been using diaphram calls most of my life so I biased that direction.  Jason likes the external cow calls and carries 3 or 4 different ones.  He can sound like a herd of cows when he gets going.

Very effective.  The key is to have different sounds.  If you hear most hunters call it's always the same.  Elk not so much.  Some of the worst elk calls I've ever heard where from elk.

"Some of the worst elk calls I've ever heard where from elk."

Isn't that the truth.     On the other hand, some of the best - "It HAS to be another hunter" bugles I have heard were from real bulls.

The long and short of it is, they have individual voices just like we do.  The key to good calling is proper cadence, volume, and timing.  Exactly HOW you sound is less important (within reason) than the other three IMO.

Quaker Boy diaphrams are great calls. For a non diaphram type its hard to beat the little plastic call with rubber bands in it out of Montana, been around for years and sound great. Think its called " the original cow talk"
