ambidextrous Wapiti Spike....

Hi All,

I am interested in this bow and wodered if anyone has experience of them?

Does the ambidextrous riser reduce the performance?

Have you got the "carbon glass" option and how did you find it?

I am thinking of 64", even though I have a short draw.  Do you think the carbon wil make up for the loss in performance?

I can not speak for his long bows but his recurves are outstanding shooters. I own 2 and both are dead in the hand and whisper quiet when you shoot.

You ought a look into getting a dual shelf, dual draw weight, then you'd really be set.

I have an ambi Leon Stewart. I love the idea but unless the archer is truly, comptetently ambidextrous it is kind of waste. I have worked on my weaker side but would not shoot at game at my present ability level.

I shot a dual weight one day while at RMSGear, and I have a Spike.  I haven't shot the dual shelf, most things I try to do with my left side are pretty ugly.  I really think the ability to shoot from both sides and having the option to shoot a two weights from the same.bow would be a good way to become proficient from both sides.

The bennies of shootin both sides is the strength ya build up....
    I have an Old lemonwood bow with no shelfs on it, I shot it for awhile both sides.
    I would shoot right handed until tired and then left handed....It really builds you up, So much so that after awhile your 50# bow right handed fells like 40....
    I retired that bow, afraid it might break, My next Hill will be an Ambi, So I can start shootin Ambi again....

Can you really build a Hill bow ambidextrous?  The grip seems so much slimmer than other bows....  I would like to see one...

Alex, Craig at HH Archery said no problem....
    I told him the width of the riser on the Old Lemon wood bow and he ask me what poundage, I told him under 50# and he said no problem....
    What I do is, I put my own leather grip on and I put a piece of 3/16 leather under the grip for a narrow shelf on each side....

Sorry for not responding sooner.  I did not see your response.  Do you mean that your ambidextrous riser has no shelves at all?  

I am looking for somethig with two shelves... Perhaps this is not possible with the Hill style bow...

All things are possible, but there are, of course, trade offs.  Most current bows are cut the way that they are so that the arrow passes nearer to center with some actually cut past center to allow a straight shot.  

Many older bows and many / most self bows are nowhere near center cut, so the arrow has to bend around more.  No biggie, but it is a bit different.  

If you cut a bow to center on both sides, well, you get that picture, so both sides of the cutout have to be less, leaving you with a bow maybe 3/8" proud of center on both sides.

Not bad, just different from what most are used to.

3/8" proud of centre is fine be me as I shoot off-hand right now.  I would like a shelf just so I can be more consistant and don't panic when I finally come face to face with a boar.

You could find an old Bear Polar with ambi shelves. Just to see if you like it, it would be cheaper.
