With hunting season either here, or just around the corner almost everywhere, I thought I would encourage any of you guys that use simmons heads examine (or re-examine) Chris Spikes'(Landshark160) method for sharpening simmons heads.  It is located in the how-to forum.  I have used the Rada wheelie and half round files and hones in the past with some luck, but the edge I have gotten using this method is FAR superior to any other method I have tried.  For less than the cost of most gas fill-ups, you can get the razors edge tool and a 3 in 1 jewelstick, which is all you need.  I also used the same method on some old Magnus I's and they were also scary to be in the same room with. It also works for sharpening bleeder blades.

If anyone reading this has struggled to sharpen the Simmons heads, check this out.  I have never been more confident in the sharpness of my heads.

I prefer the KME sharpener with the jewelstick accessory.  The razors edge guide assembly wears on the jewelstik by design, ultimately changing the sharpening angle and uneccessarily clogging the jewelstik with its own filings.

Thanks guys.  I have noticed some wear on the guide, but I think it will be minimal once I get all my heads relief ground correctly.  Anyone know anything about maintaining the jewelstick?  It didn't come with any guide or literature.

Thanks got one ordered.  I might go ahead and order the KME curved steel as I have a KME knife sharepner set from when I used magnus broadheads.

Just a plain old butchers steel gets mine shaving sharp in no time. It doesn't take much.

These topics always amaze me - all the different techniques of sharpening and equipment and such. Do today's folks have that much trouble sharpening stuff?

I'm sharpening impaired. What do you mean by relief ground correctly?

I've been interested in the Razor's Edge BH guide for the Simmons heads, but the stories of the guide wearing away from the Jewelstick have kind of held me back from pulling the trigger

Chupa,
There are probably guys on here that can answer the relief questions using better language than me, but basically it is getting the head ground in such a fashion that makes it possible/easier to remove the needed steel for a good edge to be obtained.  In his tutorial Chris uses a bench grinder for this.  Since I don't have a bench grinder I use the course side of the jewel stick.  It takes a little elbow grease and patience, but is not hard.  I would also like to point out that once it's done the first time it is generally not needed again unless the head becomes REALLY dull.

In regards to the razors edge guide getting worn, I have noticed mine getting some wear, but it hasn't changed the process or the results at all.  I have had my eye on the KME system for a long time, and I have the broadhead sharpener already.  I'm sure it works just as well and the extra longevity makes sense.

Tommyboy, I believe some folks are naturally talented at getting things sharp and some simply aren't.  I am the latter.  I was able to achieve decent results on simmons heads with a half round file and steel.  I am also an obsessive perfectionist, and I simply wanted a better edge.  I have achieved that with this equipment and process, so I am happy with it.

There are a lot of ways to "skin a cat"...this one works really dang well for me, and I thought I would let anyone not familiar with it know.
