Them Blackies are Thugs!
« on: September 03, 2014, 08:04:00 PM »
Sorry no pics. Adam and I were  on our annual Elk hunt in Utah. The son of one of the regulars had downed a cow and he along with a couple of others were breaking it down for the pack out. They had one hind hanging a little ways from the main carcass and when they went to bring the other hind to it they found a very large Black Bear had taken possession of the first hind.
The bear was unintimidated and ran the hunters off. Bears are rare-or at least they were rare in that unit-and are protected.  The hunters left the whole carcass in the woods rather than risk any more encounters with the beast! F&G told the hunter he could re-use his tag.
Be careful out there and don't mess with mother nature.   :archer2:

That was a great response from F&G.  :)

Sometimes you eat the bear, sometimes the bear eats you,(or whatever it wants!)

I have not yet had the pleasure of such a stand off.  I am not certain I would walk away from the rest of the carcass.  I'd probably be the one that got eaten. . .

It's tough when it happens but I have been there. Lost two deer to bears. One only seconds after the shot. I have seen a few friends in camp lose deer and elk that were left overnight. It always amazes me how much a bear can eat in a night.

We have had issues, on Canadian canoe trips, with bears trying to claim our food. Trying to convince a bear that says "it's all mine I found it." that you want it back can be scary. My wife found that if you punch them in the nose they get the message. Persistent harassment has always scared them off for us, they may grumble about it a bit, but they do move off.

I once lost a whitetail in Montana to a cat.  It was a liver shot in the late evening so I decided to wait until morning to track her.  Was rather cold and I knew the deer would be fine over night - or so I thought. I was there at first light and found nothing but 1/2 a carcass, whole lot of fur and some lion tracks.  Had coyotes do the same thing here in N Texas.
Everything has a price - the more we accept, the more the cost
