Bowhunting bare handed, no glove or tab
« on: September 25, 2014, 05:16:00 PM »
For quite a few years I have been doing all of my bowhunting barehanded. I started doing that for the simple reason that I wanted the dexterity for using my mouth blown predator calls and because I also wanted nothing in my way if I need to pull the emergency pistol if things start to go south.  I use a glove for all of my pre season practice just to save my fingers but I have found that when actually hunting I never notice any difference in my shooting. It is certainly MUCH easier for all of my activities from getting into my backpack, gps operation, or even a quick trailside squirt, to not have a glove on. Just wondering if others do the same thing.

I've done it now and then just to know that I could.  I think I may have read somewhere that Roger Rothaar double serves his strings and shoots that way.

Bare fingered my release is crappy and hurts like heck with a 65# bow. Got to use a glove or tab to be consistant..........

Not intentionally, but several years ago, I lost my glove.  Got to my stand and when I reached into my day pack for it, it wasn't there.  Ended up shooting one of the bigger bucks I've ever taken later that morning using bare fingers.  Certainly didn't notice the difference shooting at a critter.  However, I do get a cleaner release using a tab or glove.

Many years ago when I shot a more "complex" bow, it was bare fingers only for me. It got a little tender at first, especially at 70#,
but after the callouses developed it was good.

Anymore it is a homemade tab for me. It gives me a good clean release.

After a shot or two, it is just too painful.

Bare fingers. One less thing.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways-BOW in one hand-ARROWS in the other-Body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming-WOO HOO! WHAT A RIDE!

Forgot my glove on the course we had to drive to across the road at Sawmill last year and had to shoot bare fingers, like most things archery once I got past the mental part of it the rest of the course went well. Beyond the above mentioned reasons I've often wondered how much "aroma" a glove or tab carries and how many people have been busted by an animal during season because of one.

I "feel" the shot better without a glove or tab and believe I get a better release because of it. Sure, you'll be a bit tender at first, but you end up building up good calluses. You just can't jump into it and shoot 50 arrows right off the bat. I don't have any issues shooting 58# bare fingers and I've been doing it for years.

I was bare handed today, but no shots. Couldn't find my glove for anything. After the hunt, found it in my pocket.   :knothead:

Since 1988. I will during cold hunting weather carry the cheap mechanics gloves from dollar general or jerseycotton gloves.

I shoot bow weights up to 60 lbs. I don't do anything special to the serving as some do.  # 4 nylon has served me well for many years!
