AHAHAH Arrow question
« on: September 27, 2007, 11:18:00 PM »
I am fitting arrows to a long bow.

Wood arrows are new to me and while trying to find the proper nock height bare shafting I keep breaking arrows. 6 to be exact.

I keep moving up and down but cant get a level entry.  The best I can do is at about 1/2 inch above shelf it will end up about 3 inches nock high.

They won't break there but higher or lower it just gets worse and worse till a break.

I my release just so crappy it wont fly level.

I think I'm losing it!

HELP

Your brace height sounds pretty good for a longbow. Quit bare shafting them! All that can tell you is if you are close on the spine, not if your nock height is correct. Fletch some arrows and adjust the nock height to get them flying well and hitting where you look. Unless you have an unlimited supply of wooden shafts and/or money, you are just wasting both at this point. If the bare shafts group with the fletched arrows, your spine is correct.

Adjust your brace height and or nock placement to obtain good arrow flight and to stike the target.

Are you shooting three under or split? Three under will usually require a higher nock point. You are at a good starting point for your brace height. Somewhere between 6 3/4 and 7 3/4 usually works well with a longbow. My Mahaska likes 7 1/8 to 7 3/8. If I shoot three under, the nock point is about 1/2 inch above the shelf. Shooting split, it is about 1/4 inch above.

When you shoot a fletched arrow, you should just see the fletching spinning, no fishtailing (side to side motion) or porpoising (up and down motion) from the back of the arrow.

I don't find much use in bare shafting wood arrows anyway. I usually just set them up the way I want them and shoot. If they hit where I'm looking, they are good to go. If not, I either add weight or cut them down a bit. If they still won't shoot right, I see how far they will fly with no tip

Sounds about right!

I shoot split finger.

They are hitting where I am looking (at least as well as any other bow I shoot)

What kind of longbow are you shooting? Different bows like different settings. I have a Big River R/D that shoots best with a 6 1/4" brace. You might try going down in brace till it starts to get noisey. Most lbs take a lower brace than recurves.

Like it's been said above especially for folks new to using fingers. Seldom is their release and form good enough at first to enjoy bare shafting wood arrows, lot of wasted shafts that way. It does tell you that there is room for improvement in shooting form and if you have a friend that can help it's worth wile working on it.

I shoot fingers all the time and do not have this problem at all with carbons.  I am sure my form could be better.

I took a few shots this AM and all was fine.

Maybe it was a bad nite!

I would say strart at 5/8ths. and move from there. If you are breaking arrows on impact it sounds more like a spine problem than a nock height issue. Shawn

Thanks Shawn, I was hoping to hear from you on this.

The arrows are not left or right just tip down.

Im going to guess that at 57# and 31" draw with carbon a 75/95 or 340 with wood maybe a 70-75 or 75-80 with 125 points.I dont believe she wont share.

Ok back to the first problem>

With feathers the arrow keeps ending up in the target nock left.  I am shoting left and the chart says this means too stiff.  I am shooting wood 55-60 full length with 125 grains from a longbow with a draw weight of about 55lb.

Im I right in thinking 50-60 or more weight up front?
