Best way to build up string?
« on: October 10, 2014, 05:46:00 PM »
Hey guys. This might be kind of a silly question but I've never had to do this before. My nocks are too loose. What is the best way to build up the string where I nock my arrow? Just add serving?

Thanks guys.

Dental Floss! I use it on all my Bow Strings! I hate sloppy nocks. It makes noise and makes arrows fly funky! Waxed unwaxed doesn't matter. Start about 3/4 of an inch below your nock. Tie off go up once and down touch each wrap nice and even. Come down to starting point tie off. BINGO!   :archer2:

I've done what bentpole describes but in reverse..Really thin serving like .018 first and then serve over it with something thicker. The thin stuff is only used for about an inch or so where the arrow will be nocked. I make all my own strings and for a while experimented with real skinny strings and this was the best way to get good nock fit for me..good luck

I love skinny strings and as such learned like bentpole to use dental floss ONLY under where the nock snaps on the string and then end up at the top section and use left over to "tie" a upper nock locator! I believe I seen it here on the "how to section". Works great, simple and keeps from adding extra weight to the string! It's surprising how little it takes to make a perfect fit!
Most people get rich by making more money than they have needs, me, I just reduced my needs!

Dental floss works great. I was getting a little funky arrow flight on my favorite longbow a few weeks ago. Loose nocks on the string ended up being the culprit. The string serving wasn't in bad shape at all, just compressed at the nocking point. I built it back up with dental floss and it's shooting great again.

Use enough strands to begin with.  I've been tinkering with strings for 20 years or so, and have yet to find any real benefit to "skinny" strings.  It was a fad some 15-18 years ago, died off, and came back.  I've never seen a consistently good tournament shooter (someone who has made a name for themselves by winning) use a tiny string.

If you are worried about 2-5 fps, why shoot traditional gear?  For noise, learn to tune and work on your release.

If you are using a moderate size string, then the proper size serving should do the trick.

Last resort, for me, is dental floss.

That's the way I do it. It takes three wraps and .030 Halo serving to get a perfect fit for my arrow nocks. It really don't take to long to do with a serving jig.
