What do the "Nock Collars" from 3 rivers do?
« on: October 11, 2014, 12:37:00 AM »
3 Rivers has Nock collars for their traditional only shafts and other 5/16 carbon. What are they for? I never had a nock problem. Are they for tuning? The reason I ask is my setup is right on the verge of too weak. Maybe that nock collar would sweeten it up? I might try the nock inserts for glue on nocks but I like to tweak the cock feather rotation just right. When my come out of the bitzenburger I have to turn them just a hair.
BTW, I like and use their traditional only .300 shafts.

Help protect the nock end of the shaft. If you happen to bust a nock with another arrow, sometimes it will trash the carbon shaft as well.

Any weight on the nock end of your arrow will stiffen the spine.

I got them with some CX Maximas and the nock collars blow right off at a perfect robin hood, they are very light so not sure about spine I think they are MORE for show and to fancy up the arrow,, thats me unless your shooting compounds and X'ing everything theres no risk.

the spine thing I'm not sure but if you take fine granualr play sand weigh a small amount to 5 or 10grains then mix that with a bit of epoxy you then pull the arrow nock out and fill the inside of the nock with the sand and epoxy you can make 3 of different grain weights to fine tune,, we did this when we first started shooting carbons but don't bother any more.

I had a small split in the nock end of a carbon due to hitting something hard and I cut a small piece of old alum. shaft that fit and epoxied it to the shaft behind the fletching. Shoots great and impacts with the other arrows so I figure I saved one.

If you do much stumping, they are great.

When you hit something hard with a carbon arrow, the nock sometimes flies off, and the end of the arrow cracks about 1/2" long.

That collar will keep the end from cracking.

If you robin hood an arrow, they do nothing to help you; but as Bill stated, if you take a glancing nock hit, they will save the arrow.

I use the on all my arrows.

Yes, they are to protect the nock end of arrow from splitting after hitting hard objects (rocks, rebar, etc.) Some folks do not like the feel when they nock their arrows but I do not notice it. Now days I do what Reddogge said. It seems I lose more than break.

I use them as a footing on the broadhead end and haven't broken an arrow in a long time.

What they said...

But they also make your arrows look like preachers or priests!

Doc, thats funny. My daughter said the priests on campus at her college sometimes have a booth in a common area with a sign that says "Hollar and the Collar" for the students to chat w them.
I just noticed there is a photo of the nock collars at the top of the page on the 3 rivers advertisement.

Just being quirky... pressure of the move getting to me...

As long as I've happily and successfully used the "over-footing" of 2"-2.5" sleeves on the front of my carbon, I've never used the collar part...
