Tree stand setup when hunting with kids...
« on: October 22, 2014, 11:11:00 AM »
My 10 year old daughter wants to come out hunting with me so I'm trying to figure out what kind of tree stand setup to use.  A two seater stand seemed like the obvious choice at first, but now I'm thinking that either two separate ladder stands on the same or adjacent trees or a ladder and climber might be better options.

Also, when you hunt out of separate stands do you typically set them up at the same height, or kiddo below and hunter above?

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'd try a ladder stand with her and a hang on for you in the same tree. I've found this works really well for kids and also works with a trad bow. I normally set up for the opposite side of the tree or have the young person higher up if needed.

I just make a point to never be in a hurry with kids (even if we are late) it's just much safer and enjoyable that way.

Kudos for taking her along!

My experience with my daughter when she was that age and younger was a two person stand with both of us in it. Sitting beside her made her (and Mommy) feel safe about being up in a tree. Youth size safety harness was also part of our set up. Get the "skirt" that goes around the stand for a bit of coverage for some "little kid" moving around.

We had some grand times and even shot a deer with her there! Big times for sure. She liked the grunt tube part of the hunt!

Any way you do it I'm sure you'll have fun. Enjoy and keep us posted.

I say in a stand below you so you can always have an eye on them,, you use their stand platform and seat in place of the top two steps under your stand...  buddy of mine likes a ladder stand first which is for the kid after he gets his kid strapped in he steps off the platform seat onto his chain-on's platform which is turned to the side just enough higher so he has bow clearance.

the double platforms are nice once you get them set up and straped in tight to a tree then cut the top rail off for bow hunting.
