Heading down to Sikaville tomorrow
« on: October 23, 2014, 02:36:00 PM »
We have to do some work at deer camp in preparation for the rifle season so this weekend is it. My friend and I should get two or three bowhunts in this weekend if time allows. Hope the little buggers are moving.

Kind of anticlimactic with the warmish weather this weekend. We hunted Friday and Sat. evening and didn't see a hair. Weather was too warm, mosquitoes were voracious and I forgot my Thermacell but did have some Ben's 100. Heard one going through the water and breaking some sticks off to my right Friday night.

Three of us worked like dogs to build a 16'x8' bridge over a mudhole which prevented the tractor from going into the marsh. We got it done but now need 12 more feet.

Here's a couple of pictures of the area. I just hunted behind the house due to time constraints out of a box blind I could shoot the bow out of. Had to lean against the back and keep the limbs inside the blind.

A female relative of my hosts shot a very nice 6 point stag last weekend with her muzzleloader on this property so they are out there.

We did a taste comparison between Sika and whitetail Sat. night on the grill and Sika won both taste and tenderness hands down. No comparison.

One of these days I'd love to give Sika hunting a try.  I heard that they are more like little Elk than Whitetail deer.  Everyone that I have talked to agrees with you that Sika win in the taste department every time.

Shame on the action in your neck of the woods, they were rutting good where I was Fri eve! Seemed like last week was as good a rutting action as I have seen in a while. Didnt get any shots at stags but just being out there with em does good things for your soul...

BTW, I've done that taste testing for years and it doesnt surprise me who you picked as the winner

Hey Rich, nice looking Wes Wallace you have there. Any luck on the home front with whitetails?

Dave, thanks for the compliment on the Wes Wallace. I got it from a very famous bowhunter in Eldersburg. No, it's just doe, spike, and fawnville here so I haven't had the heart to pull the string on one yet. Getting soft in my old age.

The only funny thing about the hunt was my host is a rifle and crossbow hunter and I shot two judo points out of the box blind at a leaf at 18 yards and hit the leaf both times which surprised him to no end.

There must be some good mojo in that bow   ;)  . Hang in there. When you least expect it the big boy will be passing by. I'm off on Friday and hoping to get a chance at a doe.
