It is a Great Northern Sidekick quiver that I just bought a couple weeks ago off of the TradGang classifieds! I am liking it so much, I will probably get another one and quit using the bow mounted quivers.

This slipped by me! Way to go on the buck! Thanks for taking us along. You are right: we have to tell it like it is, good shot or not because there is always something to learn. Bringing that tracking dog and not pushing him was as good a decision as any of us hope to make. You did everything right after the shot, and that is just plain awesome!

So, total distance this buck went? Any beds along the way? How dead was he when you found him ie rigor or stiffness? Yeah I know I'm nosy!!!  

Mike, he probably went 300-400yds total. He was stiff as a board dead. We did not find any beds along the way. It was right at 18hrs from the time of the shot till we rounded the brush pile and Bob said "There he is Bisch!".

Good to know bud! Thanks for the story and the info. Most times if they are stiff as a board it's anywhere from 6-12 hours after death. So you can bet he died that night. Glad it worked out! Way to stick with that new spot.

Speaking of: small parcels are my favorite. I love looked over little honey holes. Deer find a way to inhabit those pieces and sometimes grow to a ripe old age. Here where I hunt there are scattered woodlots of no more than a few acres that hold some giant deer. They hold up there when the crops come out and use them to bed and a lot of times it becomes the breeding cover during the rut.

Nice Buck Bisch! A lot of stories slipped past me during hunting season. Tracking dogs are awesome it would seem, lots of successful stories with them.

Congratulations Bisch.  Not all stories work out to be "text book". That's where paying attention to the details and playing your cards right come in. Good on you for doing everything to insure the outcome was a happy ending. I have been through the sleepless nights after a shot I wasn't proud of, like many people here. The relaying of events and the if only's are haunting. I am happy to hear that your hunt ended well.

The dog is a  Blue Lacy. She is a very experienced tracker, having found probably over 100 deer!

Great deer and story. Laying off his track like you did is one of the toughest things we do. Not knowing how its going to work out, sure makes for a long night.  Congratulations on a fine trophy.
