Wood Arrow Help
« on: November 25, 2014, 05:40:00 PM »
I was hoping someone on here could recommend a good source for wood arrow shafting. I was hoping to purchase a test pack starting at 85-90 spines arrows on up.

I am shooting a 67@28 58" Kanati Longbow, drawn to 28.5, and would like 30" of arrow.  I am also shooting 200 grain points and 3 5" fletchings.

I would like to have a finished arrow around 850 grains, likely hardwoods at this mass weight.

The 3 rivers calculator estimates I will need 115 pound spined woods (If I did it correctly) but talking to a few other people, I will likely need a little lighter spined arrow.

I have purchased from Surewood shafts in the past and have been impressed, but they do not have as heavy of shafts as I am looking for. Kudos to Surewood, who called me and told me that they did not have as high of quality of shafts as they would like in the mass weight and spine weight I was looking for.

Also tried Allegheny Mountain Arrows, but message said they sold out to Kootenai River Archery, who I have no experience with.

I would appreciate any recommendations,

Thanks

Kyle, saw the order and the money returned when we could not fill the order.  Fir in that spine range will yield 500-550 grains most of the time, so if you add 200 for points and 25 grains for feathers and nocks that will put around 75 grains or so short.  Try some of the hardwood arrow makers that advertise on this site.  Thanks Steve

Try contacting Kevin.  I believe he's a sponsor, got a great site, and great guy to deal with.  I've got lots of his stuff and can recommend it highly.

My 2 cents...those doug firs will finish up between 750-800g and will come of your bow with some good speed and will be a devastating arrow...so unless your going after something on another continent I would go with the doug firs.

If you gotta have 850, I'd get a hold of Kevin.

My experience with Kootenai taught me to look else where.

The Kanati LB is cut to center and you are most likely using a non Dacron string-with your 200 gn point and 30" shaft that puts you right at 100/105 by my calc. I agree with Westbrook on the weight for finished fir. Kevin will have heavier; but stiffer? Please let us know what you find out.

I have been getting great arrow flight with 80 lb spined POC shafts with a 32 inch arrow, 190 gr point, at 65 lb draw weight. The overall arrow weight is a bit lower than you are looking for though.

I've used Allegheny Mountain Arrow Woods in the past and found them to be very good.  I just looked at their website and they appear to be operating as they did in the past.  I would recommend giving them a call!  Good luck!

Another option might be to slightly build out the strike plate on the bow so you could use a lower spined arrow...maybe?

My surewoods end up over 800 grains easily. I soak them in Danish watco oil for a few days and they really gain weight...then put a good heavy finish on them and you'll have a plenty heavy arrow.....

Birch shafts will come in around 700 to 750 in weight for a 90 lbs spine which is what I shoot out of my 65 lbs bow

Basket, I'll check my stash for you.  850 is pretty heavy; I have some fairly heavy ramin , too.
