Older bow/string questions
«

I'm looking on CL at a Damon howatt high speed recurve, 42#@ 28". Bow is listed at 54". The seller doesn't have a string and wants the buyer to bring a string or else it's an "as is" sale. Asking price is $200. Anyone have any thoughts on these bows? Also if I was to get a string what size string should I get? Any advice is much appreciated.

High speeds are very nice bows. If it's in very good shape, $200 is reasonable. A 51-inch string should work, maybe half-inch shorter. I wouldn't recommend this length bow if your draw length is longer than 28 inches though.

My draw is right at 28" maybe a shade under. I am looking for a shorter recurve to add to my bow rack. Seller is firm on the price but I'm kinda not thrilled about buying a string for a bow I don't own and I'm not comfortable assessing the condition of an older bow without being able to string it and draw it.

I have the same bow, my braceheight is 7" from deepest part of the grip, i use a 50" b-50 string. These are great shooting bows, i have a 27.5" drawlength, and i feel its very close to the point of stacking.

Craigslist seller will take the money and run. Let him get a string and display the integrity of the bow. Nobody is beating down his door with $200 cash.

Seller won't negotiate price, and I even offered to buy a string under the term that if I choose not to buy the bow he would buy the string for what I paid, I figured that was more than fair, strings aren't pricey and worst case he'd have a string for his bow. He passed on that.....lol well I guess that explains why this bow has been on Craigslist for the last 4 months and hasn't sold.

You would think it would be as-is strung or not. I would pass, the seller sounds like the type of stubborn unreasonable person I hate dealing with. $200? For that price it had better be mint or close to it. For $119 more and a little shipping Big Jim can send you a brand new close out 52" Kodiak Magnum.

I've learned over time that unreasonable sellers and I are best staying well apart from each other. A good transaction is one where both parties are happy. This sounds like a case of neither one winding up happy.
