All in!
« on: December 23, 2014, 08:39:00 AM »
Well here we go. After going back and forth about making the switch, I am devoting the future to going down the traditional archery road.  Sold my compound set-up, purchased a McBroom Kaibab r/d off of the classifieds, have arrows in the mail and now just waiting to get this show on the road.  I recieved awesome advice and encouragement from my post when searching for the right longbow and appreciate the help to come.

Now looking at either a glove or tab to use.  I know a lot of it is feel but what are the pros and cons of both.  Thanks again for taking the time to steer me in the right direction

I like a can't pinch cowhide tab, if you're a hunter you can wear a warm wool glove under it and still shoot.

which ever you buy learn to shoot with just fingers if you hunt out of a tree stand because sooner or later you will drop it

The glove or tab thing is purely you.  Try both and choose, or use both.  BUT, might I suggest, give each a bit of time.  Trying either for ten minutes is not enough.

For me. . .Gloves tend to feel good, they are bulkier, they tend to get on the string etc quicker.  I may not shoot quite as well with them.  I do not like stiff fingers (with plastic stays), preferring lighter gloves.

For me. . .The right tab is light, feels great, tends to take a bit of fussing to get on the string.  I think I shoot a bit better with a tab, probably because of a slightly cleaner release.  I can feel my anchor much better using a tab.

For me. . . cold weather throws a kicker into the mix cause now I have to also wear gloves, or parts of a glove, or keep my arrow hand in a muff or pocket.  All of the above are doable, but you need to sort of plan for it (cause it will come. . ).

Welcome to the mix.  It is fun.  Try to keep fun in your shooting.

I'm a E.W. Bateman tab no pinch tab, carry 2 in case of dropping out of my stand. Shoot them all and you will find a one that works. Good luck!

I also use a cowhide tab. I'm a feel guy - I don't like a thick glove because it makes me feel like I can't feel the string. The tab gives a much cleaner release - but as mentioned above, it's all preference and you must try both.

I have problems with a glove kicking my arrow off the string when I draw as well. I've tried rolling my fingers as I draw but it's just not comfortable, and a tab fixes the problem, so it all comes down to what works best for you.

Welcome to the addiction.

I shoot a neet calf hide tab.  Can't stand a glove and don't see how anybody shoots with them.

Also, all things being equal, a tab will give you a cleaner release.

I use an American Leathers Big Shot Elk glove. I tried a lot of different tab and Gloves before I settled on this one.  In fact it's the one glove I thought I wouldn't like but turned out to be the one I shot the best.  I'll recommend trying a single glove/tab for a week or two before moving to the next one.

I used various gloves from 5 years old until very recently.. Used the newer damascus gloves (Hear the old ones were better), not a fan. The big Shot is great for heavy bows, but I find it hard to get a solid anchor.

I've tried numerous tabs, most with bad results.. Now I shoot double/triple serving with bare fingers, or (more often) a plain thin leather tab that I cut myself. A $20 scrap piece of light leather makes many tabs.

I run a glove... I have tabs and shoot alright with them, but the glove just feels right.
Welcome to the journey! It is so much fun and you won't regret it!  I've only been on the trad journey for 2 years, but wouldn't trade it for anything!

Good luck and God bless,

Congrats on embarking on your quest, enjoy the journey.  :archer2:

Only way to know what is best for you is to try several of each type, tab and glove. My ILF rigs, one with sights the other a fixed crawl I shoot a tab with a verticle bow. Other bows shot "instinctively" I prefer a glove.

I find a tab a touch louder on release but get a cleaner release, I feel more in the shot with a glove, but they can wear quicker.

Welcome to Traditional Archery. Like you, I switched 3 or 4 years ago and never looked back. As for gloves or tabs, I started with gloves but now I am using an Eichler Tab because I get a smoother release...jmo.

I am a glove person. I have tried a tab now and again briefly, but keep on with the glove. I think the glove is less in the way/noticeable when using that hand for whatever other than shooting. I have misplaced my tabs more often. No idea where it is now?
