For many years, the Centaur has been been pitted against premier bows and has always received high marks. The common possible detractor were expressed in concerns with possibly the bow being on the edge of being too physically light.

The added ~5 1/2 ozs due to utilizing Dark Matter personally proved to be a most welcome and greatly appreciated enhancement.

Note: The DM Centaur remains physically light yet significantl promotes stability.

All the best in your decision.

Darren, like Friend said dark matter adds mass to the riser. If I were to get a new one it would have the dark matter. good luck

Dark Matter is a good 30% heavier than phenolic/linen Micarta.  It has some heft to it.  I've owned two wood riser Centaurs and one Dark Matter riser.  The Dark Matter has an outstanding bit of extra heft to it vs the wood and sold me on the material.  It makes the bow 'just heavy enough' IMHO.  Great stuff.  Jim can cover it with wood scales and horn or antler work too to jazz it up beyond the plain black too.  He's a master of mild to wild.

The dark matter will not just make the riser heavier. It will also make it stiffer and stronger.

I liked the one I had.I also liked the exotic and diamondwood risers on my Centaurs.

If you wanna go all out and costs is not a concern I would probably opt for the Dark Matter

The Dark Matter adds just the right amount of weight. Exactly where it needs to be.

My quiver on my dark matter made all the difference. I ordered a Selway strap on 5 arrow as suggested.

Dave,
Dark Matter is a proprietary material that has similarities to phenolic/Micarta but is much more dense and even stronger.  Through testing/research Jim was able to source the material from a manufacturer and he named it Dark Matter.  Call it Jim's trade secret haha.  No one else is building bows with it.

I just had one made that the palm swell area is dark matter. It is coco riser. I have a coco and bocote also and you can defenitely tell the difference in weight. Don't remember how much up charge for this but it wasn't near what the whole thing would have been.

I've had both DM and wood (cocobolo and Osage). Yes it's heavier but even with it the Centaur is still a light bow. I think it adds an extra 7oz.

Personally I don't think it's worth the $200 up charge but that's just my preference. If it were me I'd get a heavy wood (or dymondwood) riser and use the $200 for skins or TD option (which also adds weight) etc...

Either way you can't go wrong. The Centaur is a great bow
