What shaft size for 45# Centaur?
« on: January 31, 2015, 07:14:00 AM »
I have a 45# Centaur Chimera on the way.Should be here in two days.I would ordinarily shoot a .600 spine for a 45# bow but Jim Neaves said this bow should be shooting close to 190fps at 9grpp.I bought a dozen Beman ICS 500's and cut four to 30",fletched three, and left one bare shaft.I had a 44# BW PSA recurve that shot .600's great and a 45# Roy Hall Apache that shoots the same .600 GT 15/35 perfectly.Since my Centaur is cut to center and will be much faster than the above mentioned bows,I assumed that a .500 spine shaft would be neede.I plan to shoot a 175gr point.Maybe I shouldn't have cut the four off yet but when the bow arrives,I will be at work .and will not be able to get to the archery shop to cut them off if necessary.I wanted to shoot the day it arrives. Is my thinking right that a .500 spine will be needed with this bow?I draw 28" by the way.Thanks.

I shoot 500's beman mfx out of my 53lb Centaur cut to 29" 145gr. fp and 75gr. inserts. They fly great and I always shoot a bareshaft mixed in. I absolutely love my Centaur, wish I would have got it 6 or 7 bows ago! good luck

500s should do it on that setup.  You may need to cut some.  Try full length first and go from there.

Mec lineman,if you are shooting a 53# Centaur with a 29" .500 Beman mfx and it flies great then a .500 out of my 45# bow could be stiff.I may have screwed up by cutting mine off at 30" before bare shafting at all.I just thought since this is supposed to be a high performance bow and I'm shooting a 29" or 30" .600 shaft from my other two bows that surely I would need a .500 shaft.I guess I will know for sure soon.

You may be ok with that set up, but may need to add 50 grains of brass insert cutting them to 30" like that.... It still should give you a decent hunting weight shaft around 500 grains. i just weight a 30" ICS bare shaft with the nock & aluminum insert at 252 grains... ad your 175 points, 50 grains of brass, and fletching.... It should be just shy of 500 grains.... Jim Neeve's bow should handle that arrow weight beautifully. Those are pretty snappy shooters.

Maybe you need a 500 spine, but not because of the Speed. Check Blacky Schwarz Bowreports: With 9 gpp at 28": BW 194fps, Centaur Carbon Elite 195fps....

Ray, you may have to play with point weight, but you should be good, I shoot a 58" triple carbon Centaur, 45 at 27", cut my arrows at 28" (500 axis shafts) 50 grain brass insert and 200 grain tips....perfect flight.

Larry, from what you say I may be ok since I cut mine to 30".I only cut four so if they are a little short,I can use the other eight.
