Cleaning up deer mounts
« on: February 03, 2015, 03:45:00 PM »
What is the best cleaner to use to spruce up and touch up some deer mounts? I'm hoping some of the taxidermy guys will chime in on this one.

The lazy do not roast any game,
but the diligent feed on the riches of the hunt.

big bottle of windex and a good brush and some towels, and start at the top and work your way down.

My taxidermist recommended a clear windex, don't remember the exact name of that version.  so far I have tried to use swifters on the my deer and pheasant on a regular basis to keep the dust down.
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.

Try using a vacuum with a brush attachment first and see if that helps.
Relax,

if there really dusty use a vacuum to take the dust off, I use a barely damp micro fiber towel wipe down gently with the grain. A q-tip with a bit of windex britens the eyes right up, and if your buck is a little roughed up  a soft pet brush( w the grain) straightens the hairs right up!

It's also good to apply baby oil to the mounts nose once a year or so. A taxidermist told me to do that on a deer I killed a long time ago I guess it keeps it shiny and prevents cracking. I never asked him why
