FOC?
« on: February 10, 2015, 01:13:00 PM »
Hello,
I'm new to the site. I have a question regarding FOC%. In your opinion, what is the optimum foc?
If good arrow flight is obtained, should I try to get it as high as possible? High being 17 to 23?
I'm just getting back into shooting trad again. I've just purchased a striker sport. It's 50#28". It's a really smooth drawing good shooting bow. I'm getting ready to start tuning. I still have some 35/55 gold tip trad arrows left in my arrow bucket, I'm unsure of the length. I've just ordered a test point kit so I'll be able to shoot anything from 100 grain all the way up to 250 grain.
So, in the end, should I try to shoot the heaviest head I can while achieving good flight?
Thanks for any and all input.

To answer your last question first, 'kind of'.  I like to start with an overall arrow weight in  mind. For me it's about 11-12 grains per pound of draw weight, but a lot of folks like arrows in the 9-10 gpp range.

Regardless, with that target weight, I load the front as much as i can  to achieve that overall arrow weight and still get good arrow flight.  My carbon arrows usually end up in the 18-22% FOC range.  Some folks like even more than that, but I consider it plenty.

Some, of course, don't strive for FOC at all.  Whatever floats your boat.  Good luck.

Too each their on! Foc ,some say, does not gain much below 19%. Imo,I picked the Broadhead type and weight i wanted to try, then worked from there. Backwards some say but that what makes this fun me. Above 20% I have found that I can change 50 gr. and still get bare shafts to tune. I did have to go to a lighter, stiffer arrow. Go have fun.

I am trying to get my arrow weight up. That's why I'm going to try to shoot the trad arrows. They will allow me to hopefully get into the 10grains per pound and above. I'm sure once I get my test kit, I'll be posting more questions. When I shot trad before, I never worried about the weight but I'm hoping to eventually go on an elk hunt and I want all the weight I can get within reason. That and if I can blow through deer, all the better.

I say the best FOC percentage is whatever it is when your arrow is tuned as well as it can be. There has been a gazillion critters killed with FOC in the low teens, and with trends today, I'm sure a gazzilion more are gonna get killed with high FOC setups.

BTW, my arrows are a tad over 22% FOC.
