Good spine to start with...
« on: February 24, 2015, 09:53:00 AM »
Hello,

I made some woodies last year from shafts a friend gave me. They flew straight and true. 28.5 inches with 125 up front. I don't remember the spine.

I'd like to make some new wood arrows and wonder what a good spine to start with would be. I shoot a Big Jim Buffalo 51# @ 29". My draw is 27.5". I currently shoot 35/55 at 29.75" with 200 up front. I'd like tondo something with some good FOC.

Thanks for the advice!!!!!

I ran it through Stu's calculator, if you want to shoot a 200 grain tip with an arrow cut to 29 1/2", you're looking at a 70/75 spined woody which is about what I was expecting.

You could tone down the point weight to something like a 160 grain head and run a 60/65 or a 65/70 and probably still be fine.

I have no experience with the calculator, but that jives with my experience, pretty much, 29" surewood from Snag, 70/75 spine with 160-180 heads for my longbow. For my 53# Blacktail recurve I am using 75/80 with 180+ heads.
