I'm a recurve guy but have 2 longbows. One is a slight reflex thick limb core that's heavily trapped. The other is a 3 piece much like the widow platform and is the best shooting bow I've shot to date. It has a more aggressive reflex limb design and has 3 carbon lams.

So, there are many ways to design and build a longbow. Find one that appeals and hopefully you'll be able to shoot before you buy.

If you're not in a hurry wait until the Chester shoot in May and there will be several vendors selling bows. There will also be several hundred shooters there and most will let you check out their bows. Chester is a great time and a great shoot, unfortunately it looks like I won't make it this year.

If you're in the Houston area you are welcome to come by and shoot some of my longbows. All of my bows are in the 50 pound range. We usually meet at my house weekly for some shooting and fellowship. Between my friends and I you'll be able to shoot a wide variety of longbows.

Recurve Amigo,

Welcome to the search!  A lot of us have bought and owned a lot of bows.  Buy a used longbow off from this site or stickbow.com, Archery talk, or another site.  You will get a lot more bow for your money, and you will probably buy and sell a number of bows to find exactly what you like.

Also, pay attention to grip.  If you are shooting Black Widow, you might prefer a higher grip.  Most of the American Semi-longbows have straight grips.  That might not be a good fit for you, at least not right now.

Try to go to a local shoot with vendors. Look for traditional archery shops.  Shoot as many bows as you can without buying them.

Good luck, and have fun.

Do yourself a favor and get ahold of Buddy Gould Poison Dart bows. He makes a beautiful one piece longbow. He sells through rmsgear.com good prices and good shooting. He had one in the shop the other day that was made with aromatic cedar veneers over boo that was incredible looking. He bookended the veneers so each limb was like a mirror reflection of each other. He's as nice of guy as you would ever want to meet too!

Various bows, but if you see me shooting, it's probably a Toelke in my hand!

If you liked the Savannah, did you buy it? If Bass Pro is a convenient source for you. You may want to compare to the Bear Patriot. They both will get the job done, but they each have their own feel and balance. Just to have a choice difference, not saying one is better than the other.
