For the love of leather...

Last year I made my first quiver. It was out of green sticks for a primitive hunt. I spent so much time trying to making the quiver that on my third attempt when I had something that looked like a quiver and not a vase I couldn't stand the thin wimpy strap I had on it... for those of you like me that enjoy little build a longs and the curious progression of a new hobby, here are some photos to look at...
   

So I had an excuse to buy my first chunk of veggie tanned cow hide and begin to experiment. Like everything there is a lot to learn. Different kinds of leather, stains, stitches and fasteners... but from the first piece of leather and simplest tools it was fun.

   

Next I wet formed a sheath for a new knife...

Today I finished my first leather quiver. I made some mistakes I will not on the next but over all I'm happy with it. It's all saddle stitched by hand,  I have the sore fingers to prove it  

The body is 6oz black cow hide...
 

The accent trim and bottom is 5oz pig skin...
 

I spent some time making a pattern out of paper I liked.
 

For extra protection I built in a thick piece of veggie tanned cow.

There were lots of little things, I spent much more time looking and thinking than doing. What I didn't think of turned into mistakes I learned from.

I put another square ring on the side for a few attachments.

   

I thought to make a black & brown wool tassel to whipe dirt off my arrows and I pictured my ETAR pin here lol thanks for looking guys. Buy some leather if you ever wanted to, it's fun learning.

I have to give some thanks and credit to Bud B for his great quiver build a along I looked at it over and over and also ArrowPlane who has sold some amazing quivers in the classifieds and seems to be a great guy, happy to help. There are great people here in the gang... at every turn!

Looks like your off to a great start with your leather work. I also had to learn by doing and making a few errors. I broke down a bought a few of the books that Tandy Leather sells. Pics are priceless. I started making my own quivers because what I wanted was not available in the store. After that some of my projects were because of the challange.
My only regret is I am challenged at hand tooling the leather. I can punch designs without issue but carving is not my gig.
