8125 string noise
« on: October 06, 2007, 03:10:00 PM »
I just got a new 8125 string to replace my old dynaflight 97. The new 8125 is making a nasty twang sound that I can't seem to get rid of. The arrows are coming off nice and they seem to have a little more zip than my old string. The bow is a chek-mate hunter2, I have beaver balls on both strings and I have tried adjusting the brace height from 7.25 to just over 8" with now luck quieting the noise down. Does anyone have any suggestions on how make it a little more quiet??

I have a new 8125 string I put bow hush and hush puppies on and it is super.  It is on a martin revelation.  I shoot 3 under and have never found beaver balls to be enough.

Al, maybe most people know this, but can you tell me what a bow hush is, and what is the difference between a hush puppy and a beaver ball?

Very timely post for me.  I am having the same problem with a new bowstring (not 8125)

Thanks

Just as arrows need matching to the bow a new string can require tuning to the bow.  Brace height makes a difference, as does silencer type and placement.  Optimum silencer location can be found by first adjusting brace height (without silencers) to the lowest noise level (start with low brace and work to higher brace).  Once you've found the height where the twang is most quiet (but it'll still be loud), tie on temporary silencers (pieces of cloth will do) on each end of the string, starting from near the respective limb tips and sliding them gradually towards center of string after each shot, a half-inch at a time.  When you find the two 'sweet spots' (quietest spots) with the cloth, install your favorite silencer material at those points (same distance from the respective limb tips) and you're done.

BTW, I've found wrap-on yarn puffs to work best as silencers, though rubber whiskers also work well and are more water-resistant.  Beaver and other fur balls don't work so well, but they do look nice.

Experiment a little...you'll find what works.

Bow hush is I believe a specific carpet yarn.  You wrap it aroud your string over the sring grooves. Hush puppies are silencers made of same yarn.  Look for Bow hush on the sponsors list.

just did a little experimenting, I changed from beaver balls to a standard rubber whisker string silencer and the twang noise is totally gone! Such a big differece for just changing the silencer material. TSP you were right beaver balls don't seem to work so well!

It seems to me that the R/D type of long bow presents its own challenges when it comes to getting things quiet. Fur does not work very well at all on R/D in my experience. Also self bows and real longbows have been very easy to get quiet followed by recurves--at least for me. R/D often has gotten quiet by doing the reverse-like lowering brace has gotten the bow to be quiet.

I make 8125 strings for Morrison and he sets them all up with rubber whiskers.......I do the same usually. Bow Hush is very quiet as well but like and yarn or other type material they hold water while the whiskers will not. Do not let your whiskers hang or droop. Serve them on the string so they kinda spring out. Cut them about 1 inch long. You want them to make a small ball and not droop. Beaver balls are cool and very tradtional but they are poor silencers.

Bearbowman - how many whiskers?  I got some the other day and it seems like nothing but a few strands of rubber hanging from the string.  It didn't work so well for me to put them in between strands.

It does make sense to cut them, now that I read your post.

Also - what about string leeches?  Are they any good?

I fold one full length whisker in half, and tie it on tight around its middle with some B50, or artificial sinew.  Once its tied on, just cut the loop in the whisker.  After some shooting and fiddling with the strands and they are all seperated trim them up, shouldn't be much trimming as they are already short from folding it, bearbowman is right, they don't need to be big and droopy to be effective.  The great thing about them is you can slide them with a little effort to tune them, and they won't slide on there own.  I use them on all of my bows.  Just as a precaution I usually put a small dab of SG on the B50 knot to keep it from fraying and unravelling, but not to much that it soaks through.
