Leather wedge on longbows handles?

Why do some bowyers use the wedge on their handle and others do not,and what is the true function of it.Thanks for any input

I assume you mean a leather wedge to extend the shelf.  It helps keep larger diameter arrows from falling of the shelf for someone who draws the bow with little or no cant.
