PENETRATION
« on: May 11, 2015, 07:47:00 PM »
I was watching a hunting show and a guy on it had a 70 pound compound with light arrows and expandable broadheads and claims it'll "blow through any deer" and a possibly 180 pound buck stood broadside at 20 yards, he shot, hit a rib and only got half arrow length penetration. I find it sad that he said he got good penetration        , but they'll still say that compound bows with light arrows are more effective than trad bows with medium to heavy arrows   :biglaugh:

I watched a video years ago and this guy shot an Antelope with a compound (don't know what BH he was using). He hit it in the shoulder and I don't think he got more then an inch of penetration.

The arrow was just hanging there and they said it was a good shot and good penetration. I guess you could say compounds are great bows, you only need an inch or so and the animal dies. :-)

Penetration may not be too much of a concern for some of the "show pros"--they can chase the animal around the cage until they get it or finish with an off camera rifle shot whilst dubbing in a bird chirp over the rifle shot.  For these reasons many aren't concerned with shot placement--I've watched more than one give high fives over a shot that hit the hams.  I don't have those options so I'll stick with sharp cut on contact two blades.

Love the ones that go on congratulating each other on a good shot mid day, then they have the hero shot in the dark with the bow or some other product they're selling covering the gut wound.

A lot of what you see on TV requires a lot of footage to capture a few seconds of action. Many TV archers have the draw weights of their bows lowered to a point where holding for extended times to facilitate the camera is the only way to get those great kill shots.  As such, we see less than optimal penetration or poor shot placement.

As a hunter that has killed many deer with a compound, know that a 70lbs modern compound and 450 grain arrows have blown clear through more animals on the North American continent that you could imagine.

I love traditional archery but do not mistake what you see on TV for a limitation in modern compound bows, from experience, they can and will put a carbon arrow through a concrete block with ease.

I own a compound too but even  though it's 70 pounds yet I still use 550-600 grains tipped with a razor sharp magnus 4 blade, i like penetration   :bigsmyl:

Sorry guys I'm locking this one down. We've had a rule since the beginning about not bashing or mocking our compound shooting brothers.

I'm sure you understand.
