String Twisting Help
« on: May 26, 2015, 07:30:00 PM »
Hey guys! Hope everyone is enjoying the off/prep season. I have recently started tinkering with strings, and after a few frustrations i have finally got one that i am proud of. All the twists are perfect, and after some settling it is bracing just right.

My question is this: I am using BCY-452X, (all the local guy had) and he says its a great wheelie string, but even with a strand count of 16, it is really small. The bow i am putting it on is a #40 longbow that is FF capable. Before i start using this string, is it safe? I would never want to hurt my bow or myself.

What do you think? More strands? Different material? It was pretty pricy, so if at all possible id like to at least use that roll.

Thanks guys!
Dalton

452X is a very good material.  I might bump it up to 18 strands, or at least pad the loops out to 22-24 strands with B-55 or 26 using 452 for the padding.

20 should be safe, but padding the loops is simple.  Just cut an equal number of strands for each bundle, around 14" long, and lay then into the end of the bundles.  A little string maker's wax will help hold them in place.

Chad has a couple videos that will easily teach you how to pad the loops. It is not difficult once you see it done.

I think i figured out the padding, very simple for sure.

I do have one more question though, if you don't mind me picking your brains, i cant seem to get the string to be a smooth circle in circumference, its more "ridgey", the bundles are clearly fused together, it just isn't smooth like you guys' strings. What am i doing to cause that? Thanks again.

Dalton, that is from not having the proper # of back twists in your bundles before starting your second loop.

Definitely back-twist or counter-twist.  That's the #1 thing I see missing in most strings, and a key to getting a nice, round string vs. bundles wrapped around each other.

Hi - sorry, don't want to hijack this thread but I am about to twist my first string so this thread has my interest.  Is there  standard to follow when determining how much back twist to put in before starting the second loop?  How do you guys determine that?

Thanks!

A good start is to build the first loop, then count the number of twists you have to take out to get the bundles hanging straight.  Add that many back, but in the opposite direction.

Look at the bundles after you get the second loop built before you twist up the main string and take notes if you need to add more or less.  A few won't be a problem.

Lbr, i twisted up another string last night, and then served it, and got it to where its bracing perfect. I shot it about 20 times and it shot real well, even though there are slight ridges in it.

Do i need to scrap that string because of those ridges? I plan on ordering that dvd from you this weekend hopefully incan figure that part else because everything else looks and shoots great. Thanks again,

Naw--it will work fine.  It's a work in progress.  Hate to think about what my first strings looked like...
