Reminder to check all carbons before shooting them...
« on: June 17, 2015, 02:56:00 PM »
I may have posted this last summer after it happened, but with 3D season upon us it can't hurt for a reminder  :D

This happened at the Sawmill shoot last year, shot a carbon and missed the target. Very next shot the arrow snapped into 3 pieces upon release. Part of the arrow still stayed nocked on the string, but the piece was only about 6 inches long and sharp. I got string slapped BAD and had a cut down my arm where the arrow almost lodged itself in my bicep.

I got super lucky - but it could've been avoided if I would've checked it for cracks first.

CHECK YOUR ARROWS BEFORE YOU SHOOT THEM! and happy shooting this summer

I have had the same thing happen to me. Good practice to always check that arrow before you put it on the string. Once this happens to you, you don't need a reminder, becomes automatic.

I had a Woodie do that at a 3-D shoot several years ago.  My bruise was about the same.

I recognize the look. I was on vacation in alabama and had my bow with me. I used two lawn chairs, a broom and a blanket that I keep in the car. Draped the blanket over the broom-handle and shot at tennis balls. I had rubber blunts on the arrow. The only thing I could think of is that arrow slap on the hard ground weakened the arrow; it broke off just forward of the fletching. I now keep a pair of reading glasses in my quiver for inspections   :D

I remember advertisements for a bow-hand glove with kevlar built into it to protect the bow hand from broken arrow parts embedding in the hand.

It would seem to me that the bow hand is the part of the body most likely to get injured by an arrow "exploding" on release. I've only had one arrow break and it was POC and I was not stuck, thank heavens.

Does anyone else remember those gloves?

And, by the way, Shreffler, thanks for the reminder. None of want to get hurt.

I had a POC explode on release as well.  Similar to your experience.  I hit a target poorly, I heard a funny "snick" sound when it hit the target.

I was very fortunate, just got a long scratch on the top of my hand/thumb.
