sharpening stingers on a stone
« on: July 01, 2015, 02:26:00 AM »
I like to use a stone to sharpen most of my gear including broad heads. I bought a few 150 grain stingers but I am having a little trouble getting them as sharp as I like. The ferrule seems to interfere with the angle on my stone and I actually wind up taking a bit of it off. Anyone have any tips? these guys are pretty darn sharp but, not shaving sharp like I prefer them. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

P.S. don't tell me to ditch the stone I would rather ditch the head! lol something about sharpening your gear on a stone is very relaxing.

Yeah I had the same problem on the Magnus heads I take them apart and sharpen them in my KME and that worked great! When I tried sharpening together the ferrule always touched the stone....Hope this helps.

You may be one of those guys who is just hooked on hand sharpening and that's not a bad thing. As for me, I can do it free-hand but am hooked on KME.
I believe every bowhunter should own one.

Other than that try a little steeper angle and a finer stone. Stingers don't really require much work to get them shaving sharp.

Turn the stone sideways and work it down the edge with the ferrule out in space.  Or go back to what you were using.

I like to use the crossed stick sharpeners for the stingers.
Pick a spot and concentrate!

Charlie-Lol yep that's pretty much it. I like to sit on the back porch with a good beer and a good smoke and sharpen my BH and knives on a stone. Seems silly but, it's the little things.

Biathlon-I have tried that and it is a some what unnatural movement. I may go back to using the old ace broad heads but, I do like these stingers. I'll keep working at it.

Go to **** and buy a Rada for 5 bucks. When I shot stingers I tried every method. That worked the best and would shave hair like a straight razor.  Bill
