Switching from tab to glove
« on: July 22, 2015, 11:03:00 AM »
I'm thinking of switching from my black widow tab to a glove.  I've never tried a glove before so is there anything I need to be prepared for?

The reason I'm considering going to the glove is it seems it may suit me better for hunting.  I'll also admit there have been a couple of times when that UH OH moment hits and I can't remember where the tab is and I can see just strapping  the glove to the bow.

I'll probably go with one of the American Leather gloves so any suggestions there are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Black Widow Stick Tite and PDQ are good quality gloves. Not too thick but thick enough to protect your fingers.
It will be a personal preference thing, to get the same finger protection from a glove as you do with most tabs, you'l have to use a thicker glove such as the 2 I mentioned.
I use both at times but I tend to get a better release with a Black Widow tab, Neet tabs work for me also. Gloves are easier to keep track of in a sense..but I developed a system that helps me keep track of my tab. I always put it in the same place when not in use.
Haven't lost one yet.
You will just have to try different gloves to see what you like best. Personally I wouldn't invest a lot in a glove at first until you are sure you want to make the switch.

People say that tabs give a cleaner release. I wouldn't know, I started with a glove, and tried a release, but it was just way too cumbersome, especially when trying to wrangle kids at a 3D shoot.

My first and only glove has bee a dura glove, and I will replace it with another dura glove if it ever wears out. It was given to me used, and I'm still using it 7 years later. I haven't tried a leather tipped glove that I like better. Just a suggestion.

Check it out.

I think it is more of a personal choice.I started out shooting with a glove but switched to a tab.I have tried to go back to a glove and tried a few but I'm a tab man now.I feel you need to try a glove first to see if you really like one.Maybe a buddy has a glove you can try?

I use both. I shoot primarily with a tab, but have no right hand tabs, so if I want to shoot my right hand bow I grab a glove which I can use right or left. That, by the way might be the biggest plus of a glove.

I would second trying out one from someone else, but gloves and tabs are a bit like PCs or smart phones - once you use them for a while, they develop a personality to fit you but not necessarily someone else.

My favorite glove with cordovan fingers is no longer made, but I bought a spare and the original is still going strong 6 or 7 years now.

If you go with American Leathers look at the crossover in kangaroo. Pricey but worth it. I have had mine going on four years and still looks and fits great. If you go with them, send a tracing of your hand and John will make sure you have a glove that fits. Very important that the glove fits. Good luck.

I go back and forth with this issue. What I found is that I can shoot with either and I would say that I get a slighly better release with a $5 tab by Neet I think. It is a sort of cow hide. I have a NEET deer skin glove that I like for $30 with leather tips. It takes time to break in as does the Widow tab. I like the widow tab but you need a tight arrow fit to the string for me but you get a nice release. I hear great things about American Leathers if you can invest that much. I heard some company has a Kangaroo skin glove and that is something I would like to try. Years ago I had boots and baseball spikes made of Kangaroo and that is a nice material. Soft, tough and waterproof.

Give it time.  It will not feel like a tab.  Doesn't mean you won't like it, but allow some time.

I'm going to recommend the American Leathers glove also but I have the kangaroo glove and it's a little thinner than I'm used to and may be for you also.  If I remember right, the Black Widow tab is layered and thick.  You may want to try the thicker cow or elk hide first. All the American Leathers gloves are well made.

Thank you all for the information provided!  I'm definitely going to try a glove but unfortunately I don't know anyone around me who shoots trad, so I can't try anything here.

The widow tab I'm using is thicker, with 3 layers.  It feels pretty good so I'll contact American Leathers and get some suggestions before I buy.

Thanks again for all your help.  Only been at traditional archery a couple years now but it is a great journey!!

When I shot my compound I always shot fingers with a tab. When I went trad I did not like the tab it felt like it was going to fly off with the shot. That and I bruised a nerve in my finger so I needed more protection I tried a AM big shot and loved that glove. Then like everyone else the need to try different  gloves. I shot a Damascus for a few years then they cheapened them up. Went back to my big shot and I never shot better.
Two days ago I was going to try a tab again a Bateman cordovan. I said I would give it a week. One day later  and I was grabbing for my Bigshot again.
I like the security a glove gives me I feel with a glove I have more control over my shot than with a tab.
Good luck with your choice     :goldtooth:

I tried to switch from glove to a tab this spring.  Shot with tab exclusively for about four months.  When I was experiencing inconsistent shooting, I went back and tried my crossover glove, and everythong fell back into place.

I have been shooting tabs exclusively since the 1980's, but I used to shoot gloves. The only complaint I had with the glove is that it tends to get soggy in the southern heat and humidity.  I shoot about the same whether using tab or glove but prefer the convenience of the tab.

I get better alignment with a glove, I tend to shoot left with a tab
