Teen gets the archery bug!
« on: July 23, 2015, 09:10:00 PM »
My  girlfriend's daughter has gotten quite the archery bug. She's hijacked her mother's bow temporarily(which I gave to her as a gift).

Kelly Ann now wants a bow of her own, imagine that!
I've taught a lot of people how to shoot a bow but have never seen anyone get so good so fast.
She'll continue to improve so long as she doesn't emulate my snap shooting/floating anchor/short-drawing style:)

Very good form! I wish I maintained  proper alignment like that.

I've adopted too many bows that needed a good home.

That was after only five minutes of shooting instruction!

Girls often make better students. They don't know any bad habits, and they listen to the instructor.

Absolutely, Sam. I teach fly-casting as well, and women are almost always better students than men.

Archery was easy to me as a kid because I wasn't aware that it was supposed to be hard.

That's awesome! I have to smile every time I see a kid shooting a bow. She's got great form, too.

Teaching kids archery is a wonderful thing. For student and teacher both. Kudos Jim.

This cool! IMO...I think archery should be brought back into the schools Nation wide, here is why! You teach every kid how to focus and how to get that arrow on target, let them keep shooting, seeing that path of a arrow until they achieve on target consistency. Then, sit every kid down, and teach them how archery and the path of the arrow is like the path of their lives. If you lose focus? You could veer down the wrong path... The more you focus on your goals in life? The path is straighter and life is a little bit easier once you become the arrow!

I agree with you 100%.

I worked on the grounds crew of our local schools for a few years.

One day I had to go into a store room I hadn't been in yet, and it was full of archery tackle. Bows, arrows targets, the whole nine yards.

I know at one time, our school had a popular archery program, and I talked to everybody that would listen, and a bunch of people that wouldn't about re starting it.

I tried, and tried again to talk some sense into those people.

I started a petition, and had a whole lot of signatures on it, including some teachers, but the school board wouldn't even consider it.

You would have thought we were pushing for a machine gun class, with live ammo.

When things got to the point that we knew it was useless, I suggested that they package up everything a kid would need individually, and give them to the kids to take home and enjoy. no dice.

I suggested donating the equipment to the local library. They have a fishing program, where the kids can check out rods for the day. I thought with some safety instruction, that might be a possibility.

I spoke with the librarian, and offered to teach the kids the basic skills, and how to use a bow safely. She thought it would be great for the kids.

I went back to the school board, where I was told to let it go, or they'd let me go. I was so bent out of shape by the idiocy of it all that I quit.

As far as I know, it all still sits there unused.

I coach and I know.....females concentrate a lot more on the instruction as well as putting that instruction to use.  Guys.....well they will listen and nod.....then go back to doing it how they want to.

One of the best examples is free throws in basketball.  It's common for women to be 85% or above....men, well just watch any game on TV.  They can't even hit the ones you give them.

That is very cool James.... See if you can get her to work on her hand placement and elbow rotation next. She's got a nice looking alignment going there, but is gripping the bow too much with too much heel down on the riser. If she could rotate the hand on the grip to 45 degrees and lightly place her fingers on the back of the riser. i think that would help her out a bunch.

Here a video of my Fathers Day shoot with my daughter. She started when she was 4

Well said guys!
Good advice all around.

KirkII , I'll try that out with her, that helps.
Yeah, it look like she's shooting a Hill style bow, lol!

I didn't want to be too critical, it was her first lesson.

And get her a nice pair of camo Lacrosse Alpha Burly's, Grange or Mucks, lol.  Who would've thought what we used to call galoshes a hundred years ago would become the latest fashion trend in ladies' footwear!
