Help me select a stone for my KME BH sharpener
« on: July 26, 2015, 03:59:00 PM »
I am going to try single bevels this year and I am about to purchase a KME BH sharpener.  I owned one a few years ago but no longer have it.  I want wider stones so I have full contact over the whole head.  Just seems like it will be easier to me and the skinnier stones drove me crazy when I owned one before. I looked at JimB's post about using a dmt diamond stone to set the bevel then sandpaper the rest of the way.  Pretty sure I can handle that.  Looking to sharpen grizzly and cutthroat heads.

I am about to pull the trigger on a DMT duosharp dual sided 10"x4" stone  Plenty wide and long enough.  I am thinking of getting their W250CXNB which is extra course (220 grit) and other side is course(325 grit).

Anyone have any negative experience with these stones? or any other suggestions.  I can get one for around $100 on Amazon or the big auction site.

Thanks for the input.

I just got an 8x3" extra course DMT diamond stone.   Best I've used to set a bevel with the KME.

Three inches wide will get those heads in one pass, don't press hard on the diamond stones and keep them well watered, i washed out a Windex bottle and filled with water to spray the stones. Here is a good single bevel sharpening thread. I bought an extra wide strop to finish the heads on but i hear a piece of cardboard with sharpening rouge on it is the best.

the big extra course is definitely worth getting. it grinds the bevel angle fast and is good for repairing damaged edges. this stone will do most of the work. progress through the finer stones to a razors edge.
