String questions
« on: July 30, 2015, 05:53:00 PM »
I need to get extra strings for my long bows for this fall, I have been looking at the sponsors on this site, they all look and sound like they make great strings.  My questions to everyone are, what string material do you prefer, Dacron or fast flight. Skinny string or standard, I haven't had any experience with skinny strings.  I'm not really looking for speed, but rather quiet, I know I wont see the difference between fast flight or Dacron.  Just want to hear some opinions on why you chose the strings you're shooting.
Too many bows to list, and so many more I want to try!  Keep the wind in your face, and your broadheads sharp.

Stickbender98,

in my opinion, if you are looking for a quiet string, you need a quality material.  There are SEVERAL out there right now.  2 of the "latest and greatest" are BCY X and Brownell Fury.

As far as which does everyone prefer?  I prefer a "skinny", but decent strand count.  I build 10 strands of bcy X, which is VERY skinny, but is also 10 strands.  I do believe it is the quietest string I have ever shot.  I put it on my longbow and don't even have to use silencers, literally.

I will give this warning though, swapping from what you're currently shooting a different material or strand count will likely cause a change in your performance and you will have to make an adjustment with your arrow.

My favorite material to date is BCY-X.  Quiet, consistent, durable.

I don't care for "skinny" strings.  Been making strings for 20 years, and I just can't make a "skinny" string do the things I've read about (I've tried many times on several different bows).  For me they stretch more, creep more, and wear out faster.

A quiet shot and better performance come from tuning and a good release--at least in my experience.

I like BCY-X for a quiet shot, durability, and consistency.

Chad, I do have a question.. just thought of this today..

So what would be the difference between a 10 strand BCY X and a 10 strand D97.?

From my understanding, isn't the "standard" d97 string a 10/12 strand on your average bow(around #50)?

From my understanding, the BCY X is stronger, a better material, and around 1/2 the diameter of d97.

Although it is a very "skinny" string, it is still stronger than a 10 strand d97, 1/2 the diameter and the same strand count.

I shoot older Bears so BCY-X for me...which just shows that strings are a very individual thing one needs to learn about over time...there are no magic answers when it comes to strings

Stickbender.  You will see the difference between dacron and a low stretch material.  The low stretch will reduce hand shock and increase speed, and will probably be quieter, but maybe not.

I'm not familiar with all the low-stretch string materials.  Have been using D-97 recently in a slender configuration, not skinny --10 or 12 strands with padded loops. Have recently tried a BCYX string because it was suggested it was quieter.  I couldn't tell the difference re noise level. Seemed to shoot the same as well.

Regardless, I think you'll be happy with just about any low stretch string made by any of the string makers on this site.  Good luck.

I guess strings are something you need to experiment with. Having said that, I have not tried a lot of different strings but I like B-55 strings. I like flemish twist on the thick side with a tight nock fit. I don't care about a few FPS as much as I do, being easier on my bows.

Excellent question.  I'll do my best to answer.

My preference with Dynaflight '97 is 12 strands (except on very light draw weights).  One big reason is this lets me serve for most any type nock without having to do anything more than pick the correct serving size.  Although very strong (around 120#), it still stretches some.  I shot 14 strands for years and years, but 12 gives me a better foundation for smaller nock sizes.

X is stronger per the size of the strand.  It's not as strong per strand as '97 (either 75# or 90#--having a brain cramp at the moment).  It also contains a small amount of Vectran (17%).  Vectran has practically no give.

When you drop down to a low strand count, you are putting that much more on the Vectran.  That's why you will notice it getting a little fuzzy--that's fibers breaking down.  The breaking strength is static, not shock--shock weight is much harder on the string (like every time we shoot).

10 strands of X is very strong, but it's not as strong as 10 strands of '97, plus with it being a blend the properties are different which will cause more wear and tear.

Didn't mean my comment as a slam towards anyone that likes "skinny" strings--it's just my honest opinion/experience.  I've tinkered with low strand count strings off and on for almost 20 years, starting with 450+ back when Mr. Dan Quillian was promoting 6-8 strand strings.  Since then I've tried several other materials on several other bows, including selfbows.  Maybe I'm missing something?

Anyone who's spent any amount of time with me knows I'm a "string nerd".  I hated studying in school, but I love to study strings and string materials.  Another thing I've noticed is I've never seen anyone who's made a name for themselves shooting a bow using a low strand count string.  Many of them, especially in the 3-D circuit, are also accomplished hunters who shoot hunting distance shots.

Watch the old Fred Bear and Ben Pearson videos...they were practically using ropes for strings.

Anyhow...I'm not saying there's a right or wrong, this is just what has consistently worked for me for the past 20+ years.

Orion makes a good point about reduced hand shock between the high performance materials vs. polyester (Dacron).

There's a good bit more about strings on the FAQ page on my site.

I've switched to BCY-X after using D97 and B50 and the the little difference in speed, no stretch, and less shock combined is worth it to me.

Thanks for all the input guys, that's what I was looking for.  It gives me food for thought, I shoot D-97 strings on my Black Widow recurve, mostly because that's what came on it.  I was curious what the long bow shooters preferred.  I may try two different strings, both bows are 64", I still need to measure the strings and if they were the same I'd be able to swap them back and forth to see which performs better on which bow. Thanks again.
