Blackbuck with traditional bow?
« on: July 31, 2015, 08:17:00 AM »
Has anyone ever shot a blackbuck with a traditional bow? I've always thought they were beautiful animals and would love to try to hunt wild populations in Texas.

Yes they look like quite a challenge to hunt!

I have shot one. It was waaaay back in my trad archery history, like 1998, or so.

I was not into getting good photos back them:

Here he is today, in my living room:

They are very cool and beautiful critters, and there is plenty of places to shoot one down here in Tx. However, there is no wild population that I know of. There is a wild population of axis deer in certain parts of the state, but any "wild" blackbuck would be an occasional escapee from a high fenced ranch.

I tried to get one he was about 18 yards maybe 20. When I let the arrow go, he jumped and spun facing me and watched the arrow go by him. It looked like it was going to be a perfect shot though, so I can take solice in that I guess.

That's a beautiful animal, Bisch.

I'd PM Sam E. Stephens...with all the piles of TX critters he stacks up there's bound to be some Blackbuck in there.

There is some that run wild in the area I hunt and as stated above just like the other exotic animals they have all escaped from the high fence ranches. We don't see many and I have only had doe or very small males offer me a shot , we never shoot them with the hope we will get more in the area. It hasent worked for us I guess they just move on as the place I hunt has no high fence and in many areas no fence at all. I will ask around about some of bigger non high fence ranches and see if they would have enough to have a person hunt ( I'm sure it would not be cheap ) I know I haven't been much help but there are some free range Blackbuck around , I will say killing free range exotics is usually tougher than our whitetail deer..
